Collection Spotlight! Shiro's Super Effective Collection! (1 of 3)
Hey everyone! As part of my quest to review everything in the Shiro Cosmetics collection, I'm taking a look at the Super Effective collection this week. The collection page indicates this was the brand's very first launch, though it has undergone many changes in the years since. It's really neat to go back to the beginning and see how much Shiro releases have changed over time. You'll notice that almost all the Super Effective shadows have a moderately shimmery finish, whereas the more recent collections have a much wider variety of finishes and more complex shadows in general. It's cool to see the progression as the team's skills have grown!
Thanks so much to Kristin for taking these beautiful swatch photos!
Kristin adds: If you have any past memories of Shiro having eyeshadows with Pokemon names, this is it! Back in 2012, the Shiro team renamed a bunch of the eyeshadows away from the original inspirational name to something a little more vague. Nintendo is notoriously protective of their copyright and it's probably safer all around to be a little less straightforward.

From the website: Nobody is really quite sure why the fainting of your Pokemon would cause you, the trainer, to lose consciousness. Personally, I suspect foul play. Like a pillowcase full of bricks.
Shimmery cream, the perfect highlight. Lip-safe!
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide.
Personal Comments: This is a very soft and pretty shadow, if not quite opaque. I don't have any complaints about performance though it did need a bit more packed on after blending to keep the color intensity up. I also noted that it makes a lovely highlighter for cheekbones on my ~NC15 skin.

From the website: Recommended to use on a Pidgey or something of the sort, in order to perplex and enrage your friends.
Shimmery red-toned purple. Not lip-safe.
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, chromium oxide.
Personal Comments: Here's the first sentence I wrote in my notes while testing Master Ball out: "Ehhhh this one's kind of wimpy." This shadow and I did not get along while I was doing the eye look below. Despite using primer, this shade just didn't want to show up! I was using a small shader brush to try to pack it on my outer v, and I just couldn't get the pigmentation up to where I wanted it to be, especially since so much of it disappeared as soon as I started blending it out. What you see in the look below is at least four or five layers of this shadow, but you wouldn't know it from looking at it.
To give the shadow a fair shake, I tried it again all over my lid by itself. I started with Urban Decay Primer Potion, put my usual base shadow over half my eye, and then packed Master Ball over my whole eyelid. It looked a lot better this way, and I didn't notice any difference between the half with base shadow and the half where it was stuck directly onto the primer. It's not the most intense purple out there, but it was much more true to the color I see in my sample bag this way. I still don't think I'll get much use out of it, but I'm not writing it off completely. I'll be curious to try it over a sticky base and see if that helps.
On a completely unrelated note, I found the finish tended to look a little more like a matte than a shimmer to my eyes once I applied it, so keep that in mind if you have strong preferences one way or another.

From the website: PREPARE FOR TROUBLE.
Bright purple with shimmery blue undertones. Lip-safe!
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, silicon dioxide.
**This color gives off a strong odor when mixed into lip gloss. I recommend peppermint or cinnamon oil flavoring for any custom gloss requests!*
Personal Comments: I'm happy to report this color and I got along much better than Master Ball. I needed a good two or three layers to hit full color but otherwise I have no complaints about how it applied, blended, or looked once on. As with Master Ball I think this one looks more like a matte than a shimmer once on the eyeballs. I will say it's not showing up well in the eye look below, but it was more visible in person.

From the website: Electrifying eye makeup bound to shock and amaze. Sparks will fly. Chuu!
Vivid, opaque lightly shimmery yellow with red sparks. Lip-safe!
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, yellow #5, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.
Personal Comments: Thunderbolt is one of the strongest performers of the group - I got nearly full color with minimal effort over just silicone primer, and I didn't lose color intensity from blending. I spotted a couple of red sparks when I looked up close in the mirror, but not enough that I'd call it a major selling point for the shadow unless you're willing to break out a sticky base. I know the idea of yellow eyeshadow will sound intimidating to some folks, but I actually found this one pretty approachable - it's bright enough to be fun but just soft enough to be overwhelming, and I found it surprisingly flattering against my ~NC15 skin tone.
Kristin adds: I was a little sad to see that this updated version of Thunderbolt doesn't have any of the red-orange shimmer of the older version! I think the added shimmer particles really helped bring the Pikachu-ness of the shadow to life and without it, becomes a little more than just an impression.

From the website: Sometimes I like to imagine the real-world consequences of Pokemon battles. I’m fairly certain that the entire earth would be a scorched lump of wreckage by now. This doesn’t in any way diminish my desire to own a real-life Pokemon.
Soft bright shimmery orange, with yellow tones and a hint of gold. Lip-safe!
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, magnesium myristrate.
Personal Comments: I'm sorry to say I had trouble with this shade as well. It pretty much disappeared in the eye look below (there should be a soft orange between the yellow and green!) despite me packing on more after blending between the three colors. As with Master Ball I tried it alone on a primed and half-base-shadowed eye and didn't see much difference between the two sides, and though it was a nice color, I'm not convinced it was true to the color I see in the sample bag. I'd call it more of a peach than orange. On the positive side, I found the color immensely flattering against my ~NC15 skin, so I expect I'll find ways to use it!

From the website: Eeeeee it tickles!
Bright, satiny grassy green with a hint of a gold undertone. Not lip-safe.
Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, blue #1, yellow #5, ferric ferrocyanide.
Personal Comments: This color is a super pretty grass green, and I really need to use it more often. I was able to get it mostly true to the color in my sample bag but I couldn't quite keep it opaque once I started blending, even with packing more on. In spite of that it still looked good because the color was even and still plenty bright, even if it wasn't fully opaque.

As mentioned above I did a couple eye looks using these six colors. For both looks I started with a base of Urban Decay Primer Potion and a base shadow in my skin tone, and I finished both looks with mascara, tightline, brow powder, and a bit of my powder foundation around the edges.
For the first look I used Whiteout in the inner corner and across the lid, then applied Master Ball in the outer v (as noted above I used several layers of the color in an attempt to build up intensity), then used a smaller brush to apply Team Rocket more precisely in the outer v to deepen it. Here's how it turned out:
For the second look I used Thunderbolt on the inner third, Flamethrower in the middle (but where did it go?), and Vine Whip on the outer third of my eye, plus a bit in the crease to tie it all together. I also used a nude pencil in my waterline to knock out some redness. Here's how this one looked:
I'll be back with parts 2 and 3 soon!
