I admit it. I've never read Dante's Inferno. I like to think of myself as relatively well-read so this is pretty embarrassing to admit. The Divine Comedy has always been on my to-read list but passively in a "I'll get around to it eventually" kind of way. This collection by Aromaleigh Mineral Cosmetics has me re-evaluating its position.

It's clear how much love the creator has for the Inferno. Ignoring the fact that this is a wonderful collection (we'll get back to that in a minute), each product page has a descriptive blurb on the origin of the name and potentially the inspiration that Dante drew from. I feel like I've almost gotten a primer on the Inferno just from reading through the product descriptions.

But as for the collection itself, it is a set of 13 eyeshadows, each named after one of the 13 demons (or Malebranche) of the Divine Comedy. Each has been made with "multichromatic pigments" and as such, this is a set of strong duochrome shades.

I had a really hard time capturing the color shifts of this collection. (Well done, Aromaleigh!) This is a really beautiful set and one that you definitely have to see for yourself.

One thing to note: Some of the eyeshadows leave a bit of a stain, particularly the red ones, but they come off with some hard scrubbing.

I'll let AG tell you a little more about the individual shades. After you AG!

From the website: Alichino is a muted greyed warm green plush matte base that sometimes appears more blue-grey. It has a strong color traveling duochrome effect which ranges from red to orange to gold.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

THIS COLLECTION IS VEGAN.

These are eyeshadows, not formulated for use on your lips.

Personal Comments: To my eyes, this shade is a mix of steel grey satin with sparkly mid-toned pink-purple peeking through. Over bare skin it looks almost entirely grey. Over a silicone primer the pink-purple appears much more dominant, with a wash of gray over the top. Over a sticky base the two colors blend together in a really unusual, almost striated fashion. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. From the website: Barbariccia has a muted/greyed dark brown/green “breen” plush matte base that appears more greenish in sunlight and more brownish under indoor lighting. This color has an intense multichromatic pigment effect which can show gold to red to green iridescence.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, boron nitride, magnesium myristate, silica

Personal Comments: This shade is really unusual. To my eyes, the shimmery base transitions between yellow gold and the copper color of a brand new penny. It's covered with a strong satin blue-gray overlay. I find it looks quite similar over a stick base, a silicone primer, and bare skin, though I think the base color shines through a little more over a silicone primer. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. From the website: Cagnazzo has a deep purplish black plush matte base that flashes magenta in certain lighting conditions. This is accented by a strong violet to aqua color traveling multichromatic effect.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

Personal Comments: This is one of my favorites! It's a very rich, medium-dark purple - along the lines of royal purple, but a little warmer in tone. It's got a light layer of cornflower blue sparkles which come out equally well over a silicone base or a sticky base, but the sparkles are a little shy when this shade is applied over bare skin.

Kristin adds: The shift here reminded me of My Pretty Zombie's Tenderloin but more muted.

Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

From the website: Calcabrina is an intense duochrome shade- the base is a very deep brown/violet plush matte, with a vivid color traveling teal/blue multichromatic pigment.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

Personal Comments: This is a beautiful muted blue with what appears to be a rich purple base. The blue is kind of reminiscent of fish scales in the way it catches the light. I'll be totally honest here - Aromaleigh's official description states this is a very strong duochrome, but I honestly think the blue top layer is so strong it totally blocks out the purple base layer. I can just barely catch peeks of the base layer at the very edges of my swatch. Kristin managed to make the purple jump out in her sunlight swatch above, but if you're going to be spending most of your time indoors, this will likely only come across as a blue shadow. I found this color looked identical over bare skin, a sticky base, and silicone primer. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

From the website: Ciriatto is a super intense duochrome shade- the base is a brown/mauve black plush matte, with a vivid color traveling duochrome that shifts from gold to chartreuse to green.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

Personal Comments: Now this is what I'm talking about! Of the seven colors you see in this post, this shade has the most apparent duochrome to my eyes. The base color is somewhere between dark brown and purple, and it's got a really cool acid green duochrome that almost glows. The duochrome effect does actually make an appearance over bare skin, but it's better over a silicone primer and best over a sticky base. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. From the website: Draghignazzo is a fascinating shade when it comes to trying to describe it. In some lighting, it appears to have a deep taupe plush matte base. In other light, this base appears more grey.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

Personal Comments: I see a grey-tan taupe base shade with a moderate silvery duochrome running over the top. If your office only allows conservative makeup, this could be a great way to sneak some duochrome goodness into your neutrals. I find it looks nearly identical over bare skin, silicone primer, and a sticky base, though I think the silvery overlay is just a little less pronounced over bare skin. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

From the website: Farfarello has a muted brownish/mauve plush matte base with a gorgeous metallic copper lowlight and a very strong red to violet color traveling duochrome effect.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax,  Ferric Oxide, Nylon-12, Silica, Magnesium Stearate May contain: Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007, ), Chromium Oxide (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), (Silica (+) Bronze/Copper Powder)

Personal Comments: This shade has a muted red-brown base with a coppery pink overlay. Rather than a exhibiting a classic duochrome effect, I find the overlay is better at taking on a metallic glow when it catches the light. I don't see much of a color change as I rotate my arm except at the very edges of my swatch, where it shifts from pink to coppery pink. There's not a ton of difference in how it looks between different bases, but I find the overlay is least prominent over bare skin, more prominent over silicone primer, and most prominent over a sticky base. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.
