Hey everyone! Today I'm delighted to show you the limited edition shades from Shiro Cosmetics and Detrivore Cosmetics for August 2014! The Shiro Color of the Month is only available for August, whereas the Detrivore shades are available while supplies last. Let's check out some swatches!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: A color inspired by the ever-so-huggable Toothless and all his nightfury shenanigans.

Shimmery blackened purple with bright flecks of green. Suggestion by Heather M.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silicon dioxide. Lip-safe!

Personal Comments: August 2014's Color of the Month is a cute shade named after one of the dragons from the film How To Train Your Dragon. The "blackened purple" effect Shiro describes looks to me like a rich, cool-toned royal purple placed over a deep charcoal gray base, which makes a great combination. I see a moderate amount of grass green shimmer sprinkled through, which is very fun. Over bare skin or silicone primer, I find this shade needs to be packed on pretty heavily to bring out the purple, but then it looks quite nice and has a great sheen to it in addition to the sparkle. Over a sticky base, the purple takes on a more metallic finish, and the sparkles can be corralled a bit better. Since the charcoal base is the main thing that shows on light application over bare skin or silicone primer, I bet you could put some of this color on your lid and then blend out the edges for a great smokey effect. Very appropriate for the color's namesake!

When you look at the shadow in bright light, the green sparkles catch the light so brilliantly that the shade almost appears to be twinkling. I wasn't able to catch this effect on camera, unfortunately, but I do want to give you a couple more views to show off the beautiful shimmer. Here it is on an angle and then blurred:

From the website: Vegan, Not Lip Safe

Mossy green with fine white shimmer.

Ingredients: serecite mica, chromium oxide, iron oxide, titanium dioxide.

Personal Comments: "Mossy" is a great word to describe this. It's a subdued mid medium toned green, but it's not dark or gray enough for me to call it a khaki or army green. It's a matte shadow with a small amount of very fine white shimmer. The shimmer gives it a bit of interest when it catches the light, but doesn't otherwise change the matte finish. Despite the matte base, this shade performs best over a sticky base, which is even more evidence that creator Distorria uses some kind of black magic to make her gorgeous matte shadows! Over bare skin, I found it was a little more sheer than I'm used to for Detrivore's mattes, so I do recommend packing it over a base if you want to get it opaque.

From the website: Vegan, Lip Safe

Pure soft white with flecks of white glitter.

Ingredients: serecite mica, titanium dioxide.

Personal Comments: White Chapel is just as described, a soft matte white with a moderate amount of white glitter. This was an oddball, and as much as I adore Detrivore's mattes, I think this one disappointed me. I found it quite sheer, and I needed to pack on a lot to get it opaque for the swatch, even over a sticky base. I think it will work great as a subtle browbone and inner corner highlight, but if you're looking for an opaque and fuss-free white to use in your eye looks, I don't think White Chapel will be your best bet. It's as creamy and smooth as all the Detrivore shadows I've tried, it just needs a bit of work to really show up!

  1. The Nightfury swatch on the website looks a lot more bright violet. I sort of wish it was. Dark purples are much less my thing... Still lovely though!
