Did I get your attention? Good.
There's a sale at Surrender to Chance through Wednesday, November 27, midnight CST--the code is "SAVE50" and the eligible perfumes are listed here. I mostly think of Surrender to Chance as a decanter of commercial and niche perfumes (in other words, if you can't shell out $290 for a full bell jar of Serge Lutens Ambre sultan, you can get a 1/2 mL decant doled out to you from Surrender to Chance for $3.99). However, there are also decants or entire bottles of indie perfumes available from their site, including many old, rare, and hard-to-find Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab selections.
Because they've marked up many older scents into the $30-40 range, the prices aren't normally that good on their BPAL bottles (exceptions being the newer ones, some of which, like the Neil Gaiman co-branded scents, are priced below what's on the BPAL website). However, with this 50% off sale, they suddenly come down into a reasonable price range, and you can easily pick up a rare bottle without dealing with eBay or navigating forums.
The categories they have, and the prices before discount, are:
Some suggestions:
- The Living Flame, reviews here
- Fire Eater, reviews here
- Kindly Moon 2006, reviews here
- Tamamo-no-Mae, reviews here (I've smelled this one and it's beautiful--I remember it being a sort of creamy, ginger-kissed osmanthus scent similar to some of the other Asian-themed scents like Hungry Ghost Moon)
- The Brides of Dracula, reviews here
- Vasakasajja, reviews here
- Anactoria, reviews here
- Cheshire Moon, reviews here
- Peach Moon 2009, reviews here (I've smelled this one as well; it's a gorgeous scent if you like peaches)
- Lovers in a Ricefield, reviews here (it's taking all my willpower not to order this myself--sounds amazing)
- Signior Dildo, reviews here (ignore the name; I have a bit of this and it's a beautiful, creamy, vanilla-violet-narcissus floral that feels very feminine, old-fashioned, and demure)
- Virginia, listed as current but it was actually a limited edition from 2011; reviews here
- Nanny Ashtoreth, reviews here; sells for $26 but you can get it for just $10.99 with this sale!
(Other somewhat niche/indie perfumes in the sale that caught my eye included Carnival Wax, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Etat Libre d'Orange, and Histoires de Parfums. I like Diptyque, too, but the description of this scent as a "toilet vinegar" is possibly the worst word choice I've ever heard.)
Also, while I'm on the topic of shopping for BPAL, I thought I'd mention that Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is donating proceeds from the sale of their new single note Sampaguita ($23) to Typhoon Haiyan relief, via Community and Family Services International and the Philippine Red Cross. Sampaguita is described as "Heady, yet cool and slightly green: jasmine sambac with a hint of tea leaf." It sounds beautiful and I plan to pick up a bottle before it comes down.
