Hi everyone! Shiro Cosmetics has just released their Halloween 2013 collection, which is based on the Tim Burton stop-motion movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Four of the eyeshadows and one of the lip glosses are repromotes of last year's collection, so I'll be showing those to you today. However, this year's collection also includes two new eyeshadows and a new lip gloss. I've placed an order for the new items, and I'll show them to you as soon as they arrive. (Update: You can look at part two of this collection, the items new to the 2013 collection, in this post!)

This collection features beautiful jar art. Since Shiro recently stopped putting stickers on their mini jars, I'm not certain whether the minis in this collection come with the artwork. If you're thinking about buying mini jars but it's important to you to get the artwork, I'd recommend contacting Shiro to confirm one way or another (and please do leave a comment to fill everyone in!)

If you like what you see, consider placing your order soon - this collection is only available for the month of October! All products can be ordered individually from the collection's landing page, or you can order one of several different bundles on this page.

First up, the eyeshadows:

From the website: One part genius, two parts evil, tied together with a generous splash of madness and a particular fondness for wormswort. Somewhat sheer, ultra-pale ghoulish green-yellow-grey with blue shimmer. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, chromium oxide.

Personal comments: Finkelstein is inspired by the creepy mad scientist who's a little too overprotective of his ragdoll creation. As a quick aside, I really appreciate that Shiro's description clarifies this is a sheer color, so you know exactly what to expect. But more importantly, this one's a morpher!  Finkelstein is a great color for layering over darker shades to add some interest. The base color comes across to me as slightly beige with light blue shimmer on its own, and a marvelous turquoise over black. Shiro's choice of the word "ghoulish" is a perfect description for this color. The first swatch was done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. The second swatch was done over black eyeliner (no primer). All photos were taken inside under daylight bulbs.

From the website:
The sound of rolling dice to me is music in the air
'Cause I'm a gambling Boogie Man, although I don't play fair.
It's much more fun, I must confess, with lives on the line.
Not mine, of course, but yours, old boy - now that'll be just fine!

Swampy green-beige with a muted velvety finish; the intensity of the green tones depends on the light. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, chromium oxide.

Personal comments: Oogie Boogie is inspired by the movie's antagonist - a ravenous, gambling villain who terrorizes Halloween Town. "Swampy green" is a great description for this color. It's a lovely khaki green with a bit of a brighter green cast when the light hits it. Swatch done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken inside under daylight bulbs.

From the website:
Just can't wait until next Halloween
'Cause I've got some new ideas that will really make them scream
And by God, I'm really gonna give it all my might!

Very blackened copper packed with orange sparkles. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal comments: Pumpkin King is inspired by Jack Skellington, the movie's dapper (for a skeleton!) hero who's become a bit too jaded from his local fame. To me, this comes across as a light black with a ton of copper sparkles. Swatch done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken inside under daylight bulbs.

From the website:
And though I'd like to stand by him,
Can't shake this feeling that I have...
The worst is just around the bend.

Lightly faded rust matte base filled with lilac and blue sparkles. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, copper powder, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal comments: Ragdoll is inspired by the film's other restless hero, Jack's love interest, and all-around badass Sally. This is a gorgeous, rusty orange with quite vibrant sparkles in lilac and light blue. Swatch done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken inside under daylight bulbs.

From the website:
Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn't you like to see something strange?

Color: Medium shimmery red-orange.
Flavor: Chocolate pumpkin cheesecake.
Opacity: May be applied moderately opaque or built up to full opacity.
Stains: Will stain clothes but not lips - please use with caution!Comes in a 15-mL tube with doefoot applicator.

Ingredients: hydrogenated polyisobutene, ethylene/propylene/styrene copolymer, butylene/ethylene/styrene copolymer, meadowfoam seed oil, cocoa butter, mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, vitamin E, flavor.

Personal comments: This, my friends, is the product that made me a believer in lip gloss. When this launched last year, it was Shiro's lip gloss debut and it absolutely won my heart. The formula is spot-on - thick enough to stay put, extremely comfortable to wear, non-sticky, opaque, and just generally gorgeous.

I don't know if Shiro tweaked the color of this gloss for this year's collection, but my gloss from 2012 looks notably different from the photo shown on the purchase page right now. In my swatches above, the arm swatch is the most color-accurate - my gloss is a lovely rusty red that's perfect for autumn, whereas Shiro's page makes it look brighter, more orange, and less brown than my gloss looks in person. I couldn't get the lip swatch color quite as true-to-life, so please note the swatch is brighter than it looks in person, and in real life it looks the same color on my lips as it does on my arm. Swatches done on bare skin. Photos taken inside under daylight bulbs.

What do you think of this collection? Are you happy Shiro repromoted the colors from last year, or would you prefer to see something new? And more importantly, who wants to join me for a Nightmare Before Christmas movie night?
