Fortune Cookie Soap Spring 2015
“Let it Grow” Soap Box

I have been craving florals like you would not believe lately. ALL THE FLORALS. Roses, hyacinth, lilies, daisies, I want them all. So these came at a perfect time. Hooray for more florals! This box is based on the 2012 animated film The Lorax, based on the Dr. Seuss book, starring Danny DeVito and Zac Efron. Whew. That was a mouthful.

So let’s look at all the new themed goodies.

"Guardian of the Forest"
Fortune Cookie Soap

Clearly the trees wanted us to crush a bouquet of spring flowers and top it off with a squeeze of fresh-cut meyer lemons.
This has an almost cucumber scent when dry. When wet and the scent left on your skin, it’s a floral with a citrus tang. There was a touch of commercial floral perfume to this scent but not nauseatingly so. It definitely wasn’t heady.

"This Thing?"
OCD Hand Sanitizer

Bright orange notes blend perfectly with sweet vanilla, and is that a hint of citrusy-lemon and delicate florals I smell?
This is a softer orange creamsicle with hints of florals and a tang of green. It was subtly scented, as opposed to knocking you off your feet with ORANGE VANILLA.

"Disco Tree"
Whipped Cream

This one comes fully equipped with seasons, lights, and even a remote control! Not to mention this blend of fresh picked berries, lily of the valley, and sandalwood smells great too!
Moment of honesty time- I keep a couple of bottles of Bath and Body Works body cream around. There are a couple scents of theirs that are so nostalgia-ridden for me in regards to my marriage, I will continue buying them until BBW stops selling them. The first thing I thought of was BBW’s Secret Wonderland. Secret Wonderland is strawberries, jasmine, and amber. The more I smelled them, the more I realized they don’t actually smell much like each other at all. I can see where I caught it, but BBW is more creamy, whereas Disco Tree has this delightful berry tang, softened by the lily and rounded out by the sandalwood. I will absolutely go through the whole mini jar. With all sorts of joy attached to it. It is a delightful scent that I’m really glad to have used.

"Unless…"
Pedi-Bomb

Fresh spring water with just a hint of algae, flowing through hyacinths and water lilies, grounded by dirt and oakmoss, earthy woods & resins.
Hooray! Our first new product! A Pedi-Bomb is basically a bath bomb for a foot soak. I’m really bad about taking care of my feet in a normal way. I spent so long intentionally keeping them dry and calloused that I forget how gorgeously luxurious and wonderful foot baths are until someone’s like, “Here! Have a thing for a foot soak!” And then I spend 20 minutes making bliss faces. This was fantastic. My feet felt so silky smooth after. The excess oil rubbed in nicely when I was done. And my feet felt sooooooo pampered. I’d happily buy like 6 more.

And this was a gorgeous scent. I love hyacinths. I love smelling hyacinths. I love everything about hyacinths. I keep a pot of them outside, and haven’t killed them in 3 years! Woo. This is such a bright, fresh scent with just a touch of a tang. It’s a lovely clean scent that I absolutely enjoyed having my feet covered in, and I would probably cover a lot more of my body in it.

"Oh Hair"
Shampoo Bar

Fresh peach nectar and shaved grapefruit, garnished with a sprig of thyme…this surely is Freshness To-Go!
PEACHES!!!!!! IT’S PEACHES, GUYS! Deliciously, fresh, bright peaches. The grapefruit really enhances the fresh fruity scent, while the thyme adds just a hint of tang. I LOVED this. I was so bummed that they didn’t include conditioner. But I had some Future Prim Clotted Peach Cream Conditioner to use with it, so I could smell like ALL THE PEACHES. I also tried it with my current coconut conditioner, for a creamy tropical touch to the peach. It was delightful both ways, and I’ll be eye-balling the live release to find out what else I can have that smells like this bright, juicy peach.

"One C"
Cuticle Oil

Warm woods swirl with patchouli and topped with a dollop of creamy vanilla.
Our other new product! I’m not great with cuticle balms or oils. I get bored waiting for things to soak in. I actually have a pot of FCS’ Polyjuice Potion Cuticle Balm that I have maybe used twice in the year or so that I’ve owned it. A single drop of oil was able to coat all the cuticles on one hand. I’m not sure how long this would have taken to soak in. I wasn’t able to leave the oil on my hands.

One C was actually a pretty bad scent for me. It gives me a bit of a headache just sniffing the oil in the bottle. I think it’s the vanilla. To me, this scent has the back-of-the-throat tang that the vanilla FCS uses in cake scents. I can’t stand that tang. It makes me a little head queasy. I’m really sad about that. Woods and patchouli are my thing, and I’ve even started liking vanilla more. But I just couldn’t handle it. I had to wash it off almost immediately.

"Paradise Found"
Petal Perfume

Delicate freesia, bruised rose petals, fresh mangoes & strawberries darkened by tonka bean & amber. Beautiful perfection.
Beautiful Perfection is a big claim to make. That being said, if you like that sweet fruity floral vibe, this will probably be a hit for you. It is a pretty sweet scent- mangoes and strawberries will do that. But they blend really well with the freesia and rose petals. (And don’t you love all those gorgeous petals floating around in the bottle?!) I was surprised how much I enjoyed the almost innocently sweet scent to this. This is going to be weird to say- it seems almost heady, without being heady. It’s surprisingly strong, and lasted all day on me; it could overwhelm my senses with scent but didn’t cause me any sort of lightheadedness, queasiness, or associated problems with headier perfumes. Does seem pretty close to Beautiful perfection.

"In-Organic"
Shower Steamer

This explosion of fresh squeezed lemons intertwined with hand picked parsley may tempt you to inhale in excess.
This is what I refer to as a Kitchen Scent. When a scent is comprised entirely of scents with which I cook, it reminds me heavily of my kitchen and cooking. They just seem to belong in the kitchen for me. I actually love kitchen scents. I really love them in my kitchen as bar soap or something that is scenting my kitchen while I’m not cooking or blending into the scents while I’m cooking. This is such a bright sunny citrus with just a hint of herbal. I really enjoyed the scent, but I haven’t quite found the sweet spot in my shower to really get this scent flowing all around.

Final Thoughts

I love Spring and I really loved this box. I'll be seeing you on Launch to fight over all those yummy bath goodies.

On a more serious note; going forward, FCS box posts are the only places where you'll see reviews on products containing palm oil. I had stupidly not paid attention to ingredients, assuming they would be fine. But bar soap pretty consistently uses palm oil, regardless of who makes it. Because of the material I have been able to find palm oil sustainability, I'm just going to avoid it entirely, except in regards to the FCS box, since it comes in the seasonal box you all love to see. Until then, I'll just be reviewing other amazing products that mostly aren't bar soap. Or bar soaps that found a different oil to use. Do you have any recommendations, dear readers?

  1. Great review! I received my box recently and haven't had a chance to try any of the products yet. Now I'm really excited. I just had a question about bar soaps. I know that the use of palm oil is a no-go for some. But what about companies like Haus of Gloi that list their palm oil as organic and sustainably harvested? I haven't researched the subject in depth on my own, so I was wondering if you would consider this to still be bad?

    1. Here's a great article about sustainable palm oil: http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/solutions/stop-deforestation/palm-oil-and-forests.html#.VsJC_MdhJSU

The short answer is that even sustainable palm oil isn't certified that deforestation didn't occur, and the destruction of peatlands is not banned. I'm taking this from the article. It's the most non biased article I've seen. I don't know how to tread that line personally. I've never been very good living in a grey zone. So for me, it's just avoid palm oil wherever and however I can. I don't think other people have to. It's just my personal preference.
