Swatch Post! Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadows in Madame & Eve, Mystical Hedgehog, and Steampunk - Pressed and Loose!

Purchased

Continuing our series on the Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadows...

Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadow Madame and Eve

From the website: A striking Arcane shade, away from light Madame & Eve's appears to be a vivid sparkling teal green on black, similar to our Boytoy. Move it closer to light or in sunlight, and it morphs to violet then gleaming magenta.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Stearate. May contain: Iron Oxides, Manganese Violet,Tin Oxide, Ultramarines, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate,Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Magnesium Myristate, Blue #1, Red #40, Yellow #5, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Chromium Oxide, Ozokerite.

Personal Comments: Under daylight bulbs, this shadow is a blackened-blue with a blue-green highlight but in natural light, leans more purple. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. These pictures were taken both under daylight bulbs and in natural light to show the color shifts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadow Mystical Hedgehog

From the website: Appears as a vibrant, shimmering purple with a turquoise-green highlight at a distance, but changes to a warmer purple to pink at an angle or close to light.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Stearate. May contain: Iron Oxides, Manganese Violet,Tin Oxide, Ultramarines, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate,Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Magnesium Myristate, Blue #1, Red #40, Yellow #5, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Chromium Oxide, Ozokerite.

Not lip-safe.

Personal Comments: From a lighter purple to a darker blue-purple shade. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. These pictures were taken both under daylight bulbs and in natural light to show the color shifts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadow Steampunk

Fyrinnae Arcane Magic Eyeshadow Steampunk

From the website: Steampunk is an antiqued deep copper on black, with a touch of gold sparkle and hues of pink/plum. Move it toward light or change the angle, and it becomes gold to chartreuse, the black base setting off the vivid highlight while still retaining its Victorian-era depth.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: Mica, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Stearate. May contain: Iron Oxides, Manganese Violet,Tin Oxide, Ultramarines, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate,Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Magnesium Myristate, Blue #1, Red #40, Yellow #5, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Chromium Oxide, Ozokerite.

Personal Comments: I've shown both pressed and loose versions of Steampunk here. Fyrinnae currently isn't selling any pressed versions of their eyeshadows but I figured I'd show the difference in case they come back in the future. This shade goes from a rusty copper to a bright gold shade in different lights. The loose version shows a strong green highlight in direct light. This is more of a gold in the pressed version.

Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. These pictures were taken both under daylight bulbs and in natural light to show the color shifts.

Jessye Gets Bubbly! Future Primitive Autumn 2015 Part 1!

Future Primitive
Autumn 2015 Product Review

I really love Autumn. There’s nothing better than leaves, apples, pumpkins, hot foods, mulled cider, all of it is amazing. Halloween and Thanksgiving, Christmas on the horizon, and the smell of winter sneaking in late at night. Bonfires? Hayrides? Count me in. This all adds up to a lot of Autumn-scented purchases.

So I tried to be smart about this one and buy very little for Part 1 and then buy the things I loved in Part 2- a smart idea in theory, but not wonderful in action. So this review is going to be a bar of soap with a perfume sample in the same scent and then 3 perfume samples. We also received a sample soap that we’ll be talking about. I asked AG to try the perfume samples as well because my nose was having some major issues with them. So, her thoughts on these will be scattered throughout.

Kristin adds: Future Prim just announced a tentative release date of this Tuesday the 29th! From their Facebook page:
Hi all, we are probably looking at a release date of Tuesday 29th. I am making the final products now then I'll send a newsletter when I'm done. Thanks for your patience. I had a long wait for the product assessments to come through, but I got them just yesterday. Phew!
So, off we go!

Pumpkin ‘Ead
Bar Soap

Earthy, sun-warmed pumpkin flesh, dry cider apple & pear nectar finished with an Autumn spice syrup.
Holy amazing smell, Batman! I’m going to be honest- I got very little hints of pumpkin, apple, or pear, more apple than the others. This was like showering in mulling spices. It’s rich and heady, full of clove and nutmeg and hints of cinnamon. My only con is that Mr. J and I are killing this soap way too quickly. There’s probably half or less left, and we’ve had it for maybe 2 weeks. This is that soap that makes you want to shower and soap up, and soap up, and maybe soap up just one more time in case you missed something. I was very upset to find out that pretty much everyone else feels the same way about it, and Pumpkin ‘Ead sold out during the flash sale in moments. This is my sadness. If it comes back next year, I’m just buying all of it…immediately.

AG adds: I have a... complicated relationship with cinnamon notes. My skin will turn the barest hint of cinnamon up to 11, even if no cinnamon appears to be present in a scent's note list. So it wasn't hugely surprising that this scent turned into 95% spicy cinnamon on me with a touch of baked goods in the background. I also noted that the base had a fruitiness to it that actually reminded me of a number of Haus of Gloi foodie scents.

Shadow Show
Bar Soap

Blackened pomegranate juice, plum compote spiked with pink pepper, clove & cinnamon and the rising smoke of frankincense tears, patchouli leaf, sticky amber resin, tree moss & caramelised sugar.
I kept looking at the scent notes in the email I received, debating and debating. I’m glad it came as the sample. I bought something last fall that had pomegranate scented in it, and it made me nauseous. I had to shower to get the smell off. I also tend to avoid “sugar” scents because they often make everything just smell funky to me. I can’t swear that this is good as anything else, but as a soap? Oh man, it’s in my shower and smells really awesome. There’s this fruity sweetness that takes a masculine twist. The pomegranate isn’t as heady as previous ones I’ve smelled, and the spice gives it this twist that makes it an interesting a far different smell than what I’m used to where pomegranate scents are concerned, which are usually fruity and feminine. Definitely bought a full bar soap so I can enjoy to the fullest extent.

Owlett’s End
Perfume

Simmering black tea, clary sage & coriander leaves, nutmeg dust & cinnamon sticks, sticky dark orange oil and blackened cardamom pods.
I’ve got nothing useful here for you, so this will be passed off to AG momentarily. There was something in this that was immediately offensive to me, and I considered throwing it off my balcony because obviously just washing it off was not enough.

AG adds: I had more luck with this scent than Jessye, fortunately! When wearing this perfume oil, I pictured lightly sweetened biscotti with flavors of orange, anise, and another herbal note I couldn't identify (possibly the clary sage?). As it wore down it became a bit sweeter and I noticed a deep baking spice emerge, though like the herbal note, I couldn't identify the exact component.

Coven
Perfume

A powerful group of 13 witches casting incantations on All Hallows Eve. Ritualistic smoke of black pepper oil, blood orange, frankincense tears, lavender flowers & patchouli oil casts a smokey haze in the centre of the circle helping to summon the spirits of their ancestors.
This was nice, if a little astringent as a perfume for me. It was a hair heavy on the patchouli on my skin, but Mr. J quite liked it and bought it as a whipped soap during the Flash Sale.

AG adds: The patchouli started off in the background, playing a supporting role to some minty and lightly herbal top notes. Unfortunately the scent faded somewhat and the top notes disappeared pretty quickly after application. It stopped fading shortly thereafter and left me with just the soft patchouli base.

Tombstone
Perfume

The inside of an ancient tomb. Droplets of resinous frankincense, cool white Egyptian burial cloth, dusty sandalwood sticks, cobweb silk, hints of aging citrus peel and a burlap pouch filled with cypress needles.
My notes also say that I said this was “nice.” I also added it was a little powdery. I had a lot of problems getting this to stay on my skin. I applied it twice, and it ran away rather quickly both times. I also noted that it would probably be quite nice something else where the scent could be pulled out a little more; it just would not stay on my skin long enough to give me any kind of indication of where it could go.

AG adds: I'm sorry to report this reminded me of a soft version of lemon furniture oil. It wasn't harsh or astringent, and it certainly wasn't unpleasant, but it's not the kind of scent I prefer to wear. Like Jessye, I noticed this one disappeared pretty quickly off my skin.

Final Thoughts

Pumpkin ‘Ead alone made the whole purchase worth it. But as always, Future Primitive released a solid collection with a little something for hopefully everyone. I can’t wait to see their Part 2 release with their shea butter scrubs and milk bath tea with limited edition scents specifically for the surprise treats.

Random Product Review! Shiro Color of the Month and new releases for September 2015!

Hey everyone! It's been kinda Shiro-heavy around here lately, but I've got one more round of new releases to show you before switching it up. The winning Color of the Month for September 2015 was The Last Unicorn, which is the very first CotM face product! Shiro also released two eyeshadows inspired by Mad Max: Fury Road, so I figured I'd show them to you today as well. Let's take a look!

Disclosure note: I purchased all the Shiro products shown here. The Blackbird loose shadows I used in the eye look at bottom were press samples. I purchased all other products used in the eye look.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: September’s Color of the Month is the first face product to win the CotM poll, hooray! This is a unique but wearable highlight, silvery shimmer with very subtle lavender shine. Color suggestion by Sinsemellia M.

Price is for one 20-mL jar with sifter.

Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, magnesium myristrate, aluminum powder, silicon dioxide. Safe for eyes and face, but not lips!

Personal Comments: As advertised, this highlight is a mix of pale lavender shine with silver shimmer. It builds up nicely if you want a more intense finish. Folks who dislike sparkly highlights will want to give this a miss. Though it has a sheen from normal conversational distance, once I get within a foot or foot and a half from the mirror, the silver sparkles become very readily apparent and... what's that you say? The blended swatch above does a terrible job showing the finish? You're totally right. Let's take a look at an angled shot (heavy and blended swatches over bare skin):

There we go, hopefully that will give you a better look at the combined sheen and sparkle in the blended swatch, plus the lavender shine at the edges of the heavy swatch. Since this product is approved for use on the eyes, I'll likely get the most use out of this as an inner corner highlight or overshadow patted over darker mattes. The lavender sheen (which usually reads as a soft, cool pink to my eyes, if I'm honest) is readily apparent in a heavy arm swatch but more subtle on the cheeks. In the spectrum of Shiro's permanent highlighters, this is more intense than the Boy Band highlights but less intense (and a very different finish) than Curaga. It lasted nicely for the 7 hours I was able to test it before I had to wash it off.

I also want to note that this is a super fine and lightweight powder. At one point during testing I picked up some on my brush, then tapped my brush to rid it of any excess... and suddenly had no product on the brush. If you're trying to get a precise placement I definitely recommend patting rather than sweeping it on to avoid throwing sparkles everywhere.

Also, I have good news for anyone who can't live without this product (because unicorns) but can't see themselves wearing a cool-toned and shimmery highlighter. Take a look at what happens when you put this eye-safe product over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy:

And this photo doesn't even show how well it pulls out the lavender sheen. The Last Unicorn, we're gonna get along just fine.

In the swatch collage at top, both swatches were done over bare skin. Heavy swatch done with a flat eyeshadow brush, blended swatch done with a blush brush. Photos taken in natural light.

Warboy

From the website: Oh, what a day! What a lovely day!

Matte bruisey red-purple-brown, for that radiant (or irradiated…) half-lifer glow. More red on initial application (as shown), rubs down more purpley-brown to a very convincing bruise shade. Price is for one full 5-mL jar with sifter.

This is in the Sandbox because it’s an “I felt like it” color, but it is not technically limited edition and may be considered permanent until further notice! (This is also okay for requesting as a custom lip gloss).

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide. Lip safe!

Personal Comments: This is an incredibly pretty shade, and man, it performs beautifully. I patted it onto my eyelids for the eye look below and it only took me a few swipes with a blending brush to fully blend out the edges, but the color stayed intense. So good! When I think of my favorite indie mattes Shiro doesn't generally come to mind, but this shadow is making me sit up and pay attention. Also, as a bonus, it makes a lovely blush!

It's worth pointing out, however, that this shade can swatch really streaky over bare skin. Here's the "first impressions" swatch I posted on my Instagram when it first arrived:

I haven't tested this shadow over bare eyeball skin, but the swatches suggest this is one that will perform best with primer.

In the swatch collage at top: Bottom swatch swiped over bare skin. Top swatch patted over Urban Decay Primer Potion. Photos taken in natural light. I edited the open jar shot (upper right photo) by increasing contrast and brightness, as it was a little dark. I did not edit any other photos (aside from cropping!).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: You will arrive at the gates of Valhalla, shiny and chrome!

The most reflective, metallic, chrome-y silver I could manage. Sadly not lip-safe (but neither is real chrome). Swatch is over basic primer (TFSI), but when foiled this stuff turns into a molten liquidy silver. Price is for one full 5-mL jar with sifter.

This is in the Sandbox because it’s an “I felt like it” color, but it is not technically limited edition and may be considered permanent until further notice!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, aluminum powder, silicon dioxide.

Personal Comments: The Shiro team really knocked this shadow out of the park! The site description isn't kidding when it says this takes on the appearance of molten silver when foiled or put over glitter glue. I'm so impressed! It's so reflective that it's tough to photograph properly. Here are a couple angled shots of the Pixie Epoxy swatch:

It's pretty awesome even over just silicone primer, as you'll see in the eye look below. If you're looking for a super intense true silver (I can't spot any green or other undertones), definitely check this one out. I will say you definitely need at least a silicone primer to pull out the metallic finish, as it's just a ton of silver sparkles over bare skin.

Swatches done as follows, from left to right: swiped over bare skin, patted over Urban Decay Primer Potion, patted over UDPP and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken in natural light.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did an eye look with the two eyeshadows because I needed them on my face as quickly as possible:

I started with primer and a base shadow in my skin tone, then placed Blackbird Dog Days (press sample) as a transition shade. Shiro Warboy is all over the lid and outer lower lash line. I deepened the outer corner with Femme Fatale Seven Lost Lords, Blackbird Atlas (press sample), and Blackbird Lucid (press sample). Shiro Witness Me! is in the inner corner.

Collection Spotlight! Shiro's Tributes Collection! (3 of 3)

Hey everyone! This is the third and final post swatching and reviewing the Tributes Collection from Shiro Cosmetics. You can check out part one here and part two here. Thanks again to Kristin for the beautiful swatch photos!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: “Bright and bubbly as ever, Effie Trinket trots to the podium and gives her signature, ‘Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!’ Her pink hair must be a wig because her curls have shifted slightly off-center since her encounter with Haymitch.”

Bubbly purple-toned magenta. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, aluminum powder, silica.

Personal Comments: Of all the shades in this collection, I believe this one has the most metallic finish over just primer. In the eye look below you'll see it holds its own next to Unforgettable, even though Ever In Your Favor was just over silicone primer and Unforgettable was over glitter glue. I get some fallout from this, but nothing major.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: “She offers him the silver bow and sheath of arrows. My bow! My arrows! Just the sight of them makes me so angry I want to scream, at myself, at that traitor Peeta for distracting me from having them. I could kill them, every one of them, if those silver weapons were in my hands.”

Shimmering silver with a slight greenish cast and bright silver sparks. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, aluminum powder, silica.

Personal Comments: This shade has a nice sheen over primer and reaches its full metallic potential over glitter glue. No complaints about performance here - it looks a little sheer over primer in the swatch above but I didn't have any issues with opacity in the eye look. If there's such a thing as a "subdued" silver, this is a good option, but if you're looking for a super molten metallic silver, it's worth mentioning this recent release called Witness Me!, which I'm hoping to review for you soon.

From the website: “The others assure me I am charming. Peeta actually is charming and then utterly winning as the boy in love. And there I am, blushing and confused, made beautiful by Cinna’s hands, desirable by Peeta’s confession, tragic by circumstance, and by all accounts, unforgettable.”

Hot pink-toned shimmery red with bright red sparks. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, red #40, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal Comments: You guys, I hate giving negative reviews because I know how much work goes into these handmade products, but I have to be honest: this eyeshadow performs pretty poorly for me. When I did the eye look below (over silicone primer), the vast majority of Unforgettable's base color and shimmer wound up on my cheeks, and I was left with a patchy, translucent pink area where I'd first tried to pack on the eyeshadow. I had to pull out the glitter glue just to get it to adhere to my skin. Additional testing has shown me that packing this shadow heavily directly over silicone primer (with no base shadow) yields better results, but obviously that really restricts how you can use the product. If you can't live without this color I'd say start with a sample and be prepared to use some sort of grippy base, like a glitter glue or NYX Milk. Keep in mind my jar is from 2012 so it's possible the Shiro team have improved the formula since then, but as it stands I can't recommend this shadow.

From the website: “A few steps into the woods grows a bank of wildflowers. Perhaps they are really weeds of some sort, but they have blossoms in beautiful shades of violet and yellow and white. I gather up an armful and come back to Rue’s side. Slowly, one stem at a time, I decorate her body in the flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors…”

Soft petal pink with green and gold sparks. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal Comments: This shade is a little tough for me to review because it doesn't show up too well on my skin tone. Over primer I believe it's not fully opaque, and the sparks don't show up too well - it leans more toward a satin finish. It has much more impact and dimension over glitter glue. No complaints about performance here, but I don't get much use out of it because it blends into my coloring so much!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As usual, I did an eye look using these four shades:

I started with Urban Decay Primer Potion and a base shadow in my skin tone. From inner corner to outer corner I used: Huntress, Wildflowers, Ever In Your Favor, and Unforgettable. As described above I was really unhappy with how Unforgettable looked just over primer, so I applied Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy just over the outer triangle and reapplied Unforgettable on top of it so it would stay put.

That wraps up the Shiro Tributes Collection!

Perfume Review: BPAL's The Butterfly (Last Unicorn collection)

Fesoj - Papilio machaon (by) fesoj http://www.flickr.com/photos/16847028@N07/3703041681/ Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0

Today I'm reviewing an oldie-but-goodie from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's The Last Unicorn series, based on the Peter S. Beagle classic. The scent is The Butterfly.

Price: $26 for a 5 mL amber glass bottle of perfume oil with polyseal cap.
Samples: Can be purchased as part of the Last Unicorn Imp's Ears: Unicorn Horn 1 collection of 7 samples from the Last Unicorn collection for $38.50.
(More details about price and shipping can be found in our Company Overview post about Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.)
Description from the website: "Then one afternoon the butterfly wobbled out of a breeze and lit on the tip of her horn. He was velvet all over, dark and dusty, with golden spots on his wings, and he was as thin as a flower petal. Dancing along her horn, he saluted her with his curling feelers. “I am a roving gambler. How do you do?”

Fuzzy brown tonka bean, golden amber, bergamot, and petitgrain."

The citrus notes of the bergamot and petitgrain jump out at me immediately when I first dab this perfume on, so the alleged "fuzziness" of the scent is not immediately apparent. It doesn't smell like fresh citrus, though, either; it feels like it hovers in a peculiar middle ground between a fresh scent and an Oriental perfume.

The top notes fade down and the amber becomes more apparent as the scent dries down. An orangey lightness remains but the velvety warmth of amber and tonka spread out over the skin--mostly amber, with bergamot and petitgrain tinging the top.

I find the scent quite light and eventually rather powdery from the amber; it reminds me of a lighter version of Guerlain's Shalimar, actually, the combination of that powdery vanillic amber and the Earl Grey bergamot note, but much, much lighter than Shalimar. It's almost like a grown-up creamsicle--a completely inedible creamsicle made of perfume, but it shares that same type of feel, the warm creaminess juxtaposed with bright citrus.

I always feel drawn to this scent for its description, and because I love The Last Unicorn as a book, but I don't actually find this all that appealing or intriguing as a perfume, to be honest. It's fine--it smells pleasant, work-safe and inoffensive, but it's not the type of scent I could become obsessed with, or fall in love with. Have you tried it? What do you think of it?

For other reviews of The Butterfly, you can also check out the BPAL forums, A Scent A Day, or We Heart This.

Note: this scent is vegan.

Collection Spotlight! Shiro's Tributes Collection! (2 of 3)

Hey everyone! We're back with the second of three quads comprising the Tributes Collection from Shiro Cosmetics, based on the Hunger Games series of books and movies. Here is Part 1 and some notes about the collection as a whole, and here is part 3. Thank you again to Kristin for taking these beautiful swatch photos. Let's check out these eyeshadows!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: “To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. And more than once, I have turned in the school hallway and caught his eyes trained on me, only to quickly flit away…”

Shimmery light golden brown with blue sparks. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal Comments: This was love at first swatch, and is one of the shades that helped me fall head over heels for the brand. I still recommend it to anyone looking for a neutral with a twist or a single wash of color over the lid. On my ~NC15 skin tone itworks beautifully for both purposes. The light blue sparks are subtly visible over primer and a little more prominent over glitter glue. It's a beautiful satin finish over primer - it catches just enough light to make a lovely soft inner corner highlight. It looks gorgeously foiled over glitter glue. If you're a neutral lover, definitely get a sample of this in your next order!

Kristin adds: Here's another shot of Baker's Boy from a previous swatch post. It has a bit of a peachy twist in certain lights.

From the website: “The door opens and a young man who must be Cinna enters. I’m taken aback by how normal he looks. The only concession to self-alteration seems to be metallic gold eyeliner that has been applied with a light hand. It brings out the flecks of gold in his green eyes. And, despite my disgust with the Capitol and their hideous fashions, I can’t help thinking how attractive it looks.”

Shimmery gold-bronze with purple sparks. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, bronze powder, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal Comments: Remake is another of my favorite colors from the Shiro line. It's an absolutely gorgeous gold that catches the light nicely over primer and looks downright molten over a sticky base. The light purple sparks add a beautiful look to the jar, but I have to admit I don't see them on my eyes, even over a sticky base.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: “My father was particularly fond of mocking-jays. When we went hunting, he would whistle or sing complicated songs to them and, after a polite pause, they’d always sing back. Not everyone is treated with such respect. But whenever my father sang, all the birds in the area would fall silent and listen.”

Metallic brown-copper-bronze. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, bronze powder, silica.

Personal Comments: This is a beautiful shade that works nicely through the crease on my ~NC15 skin tone. In practice it's not much darker than Remake when used over a silicone primer, but it becomes deeper, richer, and much more distinct over glitter glue. As with the previous two shades, it's something of a satin shimmer over primer but takes on a lovely, strong foiled quality over a sticky base.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: “In the woods waits the only person with whom I can be myself. Gale. I can feel the muscles in my face relaxing, my pace quickening as I climb the hills to our place, a rock ledge overlooking a valley. The sight of him waiting there brings on a smile. Gale says I never smile except in the woods.”

Shimmery forest green with subtle brown-gold tones. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, chromium green oxide.

Personal Comments: As advertised, this is a gorgeous shimmery forest green. It becomes a bit richer and more green over a sticky base, but otherwise looks pretty similar to when it's applied over just a silicone primer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did something a little different this time around, because I love Shiro's metallic shades and I think it's worth demonstrating how they look over different bases. It's also worth showing that it becomes somewhat easier to differentiate the gold shades from each other over a glitter glue, whereas over primer they all look fairly similar. I did the same look on both eyes but used different bases: Baker's Boy in the inner corner, Remake across the lid, Mockingjay on the outer corner, and Beyond the Fence along the lower lashline. I also used a touch of Mockingjay through the crease and to lightly blend out Beyond the Fence. Do note I took the following photos under daylight bulbs.

Here's the look over just Urban Decay Primer Potion:

As you can see, there's not a ton of contrast between the three lid shades. If you look closely you can distinguish the base colors, but they make a pretty seamless gradient.

Now, here's the look over UDPP plus Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy under all the shades:

The foiled, metallic finish really comes out over the glitter base, and the base colors of the lid shades are much more easily distinguishable from each other. Beyond the Fence changes the least between the two eyes, but is richer and greener over Pixie Epoxy.

Stay tuned for the last quad of shades in a couple of days!

Random Product Review! Silk Naturals Vegan Mascara

Is it still indie if it's supplied by a vendor?

A while back I took a look at the mascara from Herbanluxe and was very fond of it. However, there were a few things that in retrospect held it back from being "the best" for me. The price was a bit higher than I'd have preferred, the risk associated with liquid indie products with minimal preservatives, and that it didn't provide my lashes with more volume. While I'm not sure if this is "truly" an indie product, the Silk Naturals mascara was the first mascara I've ever purchased to work really well for me, and the one I come back to again and again. So.. I'm going to bend the rules a tiny bit and take this random product review time to talk about it!

Company Overview: Vivid Lacquer

Vivid Lacquer Spaaaace!, 4 coats, no topcoat. Forgot to clean up around my nails before taking this picture, sorry.

Nothing to Disclose

It has always been my beauty dream to look like the night sky in as many ways as possible. The first higher-end makeup product I ever remember buying was a royal blue eyeliner from Hard Candy with silver glitter in it, back in the '90s when Hard Candy was a department store brand instead of something cheap sold at Wal-Mart. I was browsing at the Soap Box Company recently and came across a deep blue jelly with silver sparkles in it called Spaaaace!, from a company I'd never tried before called Vivid Lacquer, and had to have it! I think this particular color is sold out now, but I thought I'd do a writeup of Vivid Lacquer anyway for this Company Overview, in case you hadn't heard of them either and see another shade that strikes your fancy.

Packaging:

My polish came in a standard clear glass bottle with a black cap and a round brush. I had no issues with the packaging--the brush was evenly cut, no shedding or splaying. The bottle is labeled with a clear sticker with a black cat and the name of the company--that sticker seems to be peeling away from the bottle a little, which I didn't like; there's a round opaque sticker on the bottom of the bottle with the shade name. There is no other labeling as far as ingredients or volume.

Selection:

Although I got my polish from The Soap Box Company, Vivid Lacquer's main storefront seems to be their Etsy store. They have their own domain that isn't active yet.

They carry a selection of 3-free polishes that range from holos, glitters, and shimmers to this incredibly cool gray jelly packed with microglitter that reminds me of granite, or static.

The most interesting thing they carry, though, is their own custom line of stamping plates! They make all their designs themselves, apparently. I haven't tried these, because I have no patience for stamping, but have read good reviews. My favorites: KNITWEAR stamping plates with Fair Isle patterns! (be still, my beating heart! How perfect for fall/winter, right?) Cephalopods! Beautiful animal prints including photographic peacock feather textures and alligator!

Samples:

No samples, as far as I know.

Quality:

I'm very pleased with my Spaaaace! polish, which is a glossy cobalt blue jelly with a sparse mixture of hex, round, and bar glitter in white, silver, and blues--it really does look like stars in the night sky, and dries fairly flat. It took four coats to get it to the opacity seen in my photo above (no topcoat), but the glitter is sparse enough that it looked fine with that many coats, and wasn't just jam-packed onto the nail. If I weren't taking a photo for review, I'd probably just start with a blue cream polish as a base layer.

Cost:

Costs seem pretty reasonable, particularly since all polishes seem to be on sale right now. Normally around $9 for 15 mL, now you can get them for around $5 each. Stamping plates are $8 each. This is expensive compared to something like Bundle Monster, but since these are custom designs, I don't think it's really comparable.

Customer Service:

I did not order from Vivid Lacquer directly, so I can't speak to this.

TAT:

I did not order from Vivid Lacquer directly, so I can't speak to this personally, but their shop front page promises a 24-hour turnaround time at the moment, while each product page has "Ready to ship in 1-2 weeks" on the shipping page.

Shipping:

International shipping seems to be available and starts around $9.50. For the US, shipping seems to start around $3.00, which is very reasonable.

Personal Thoughts:

I haven't explored the world of indie nail polishes as much as I'd like to, but every foray I've made into the indie lacquer world has been very positive so far. I am still lusting after Essie Starry Starry Night (or Llarowe's dupe, which I'll probably order one of these days) to help fulfill all my night sky nail polish dreams, but Spaaaace! is helping scratch the itch very nicely for now.

Have you tried Vivid Lacquer's polishes or stamping plates? What's your favorite indie polish? Do you have any suggestions for other starry blue polishes to check out?

Perfume Review! Fall Fragrances from Southern Comforts

Are you ready to ring in the autumn weather?

You know that horrifying moment when you step outside and it's still balmy and beautiful, but you glance over and see the tips of the leaves starting to turn color?

Suddenly you know the end is nigh, foliage is only weeks away, temperatures will soon plummet and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING will seep into every aspect of your life for the next three months. It's a bittersweet moment when you realize you have to say goodbye to the summer. It's also bittersweet saying goodbye to my savings because all my favorite indie shops start dropping autumn releases!

Normally I jump on Haus of Gloi's autumn releases since they go up for sale first, but I've already covered that collection pretty extensively in the past. Instead, let's check out the new Southern Comforts autumn sampler collection!
