Perfume Review! Shoikan Grove from Solstice Scents

Purchased
Rich pine woods, whispering smoke and a slip of vanilla make Shoikan Grove a favorite of mine.
Nothing says holiday spirit like an "eerily dark and maddeningly still wood", right? I've been cycling through several different fragrances this month in celebration of winter and all the festive cheer that goes along with it. But I keep coming back to Shoikan Grove from Solstice Scents despite not being part of any holiday series or collection.

Collection Spotlight! The Injurious Collection by My Pretty Zombie!

Purchased

It's been awhile since we've taken a look at My Pretty Zombie! This is the new Injurious Collection, released on Black Friday. If I had to pick a "theme" for this trio, it'd be uh..."medical procedures" or something about removing things from people. The owner says, My new trio! I love pretty things named after gross things!" and provides a brief definition of the names. I won't repeat them here for those with sensitive stomachs.

The shadows themselves are smooth duo-chromes. I had trouble using all three shades in one EOTD but I thought that Enucleate and Trepanation in particular work wonderfully together. The pink highlight is a little too peachy for me at the moment. I'll have to work on the best way to use it.

Outer half: Enucleate, Inner half: Trepanation

Eye Shadow Ingredients: mica, silica, titanium dioxide, ferric ferrocyanide, aluminum powder, magnesium myristrate

Indie Know hits the road! Visiting Shiro Cosmetics at Crafty Wonderland!

Fellow Seattle-based blogger, AG, and I took a trip down to Portland, Oregon last weekend for Crafty Wonderland, a large, semi-annual fair for artisans of the Pacific Northwest to showcase their goods.

It was huge. There were over 200 vendors filling the exhibition hall with a large variety of product types. We recognized some of them from Seattle craft shows but a vast majority were brand new.

The definite highlight was the Shiro booth! I could lie and say that this wasn't the inspiration for our trip in the first place but...yeah.

Both Caitlin (in front, posing) and Lauren (in back, selling) were lovely and very patient as we fangirl-ed over all of their things. Including the two new contour powders that we featured earlier this week.

AG adds: Agreed, it was great meeting Caitlin and Lauren! Between tackling their enormous Black Friday queue and prepping for Crafty Wonderland, they were both running on very little sleep, but were just as awesome and cheerful as I expected.

They also had a few special edition, layered lipglosses. (Lauren said "never again" as they were a huge pain to make.) The gloss on the far left is Figgy Pudding which we also covered in the contour powder post earlier this week.

AG adds: I believe they also had some special edition pressed palettes at the show, one of which included a less sparkly version of November CotM Turkey Coma (original version reviewed here) and a nameless matte highlight which I believe was created specifically for the palette. I don't know if the Shiro team always brings special edition products to fairs, but it's definitely good incentive to watch for their next booth appearance!

It was a pretty awesome trip and we had some excellent food in Portland.

Random Product Review! Punkie Night Bath Streusel from Paintbox Soapworks!

Paintbox Soapworks has an interesting take on the bath bomb style product. Instead of a solid mass, they instead sell "bath streusel" which is supposed to be a combination of a bath melt, bubble bar, and bubble bomb in a loose yet chunky form. It's meant to be moisturizing and bubbly.

Paintbox offers this product in most (all?) of their scents but only lists items as they're in stock. Bath Streusels seem to be a pretty popular offering since I've seen several different varieties come in and out of stock. This particular one is in "Punkie Night," a scent from the Paintbox Fall release.
Frothy steamed pumpkin milk spiked with rowdy cloves, jittery black tea & a rasp of cinnamon bark
Though this is definitely meant to be an autumn seasonal, it's also an excellent one for winter. The pumpkin note is subtle and though there's some spice note that sticks out awkwardly in jar, it settles smoothly in the bath.

One jar of Bath Streusel is advertised as enough for 3-4 baths but I think that's a low estimate. I mistakenly tossed a third of a jar into the water the first time I tried it and found myself swimming in oil bubbles. Somewhere between a fourth or a fifth of a jar is more ideal for me.

AG adds: I have a jar of Bath Streusel in Punkie Night as well, and I've tried it once so far. My first impressions were something of a mixed bag. Aesthetically, this didn't really work for me - once the initial bubbles settled, I saw a light oil sheen across the surface, plus the occasional larger oil droplet floating around. I was also unhappy with the scent. I really enjoy spiced and spicy scents, but this smelled like straight up cinnamon essential oil with no other notes. I only used about 10-15% of the jar, but I could still easily detect the cinnamon scent for my entire hour-long bath, as well as lightly on my skin after the bath. On the positive side, my perpetually dry and itchy winter legs felt better after the bath than before, and I only felt a slight bit of oily film on my skin (which is just fine in my book). Bottom line: since this scent doesn't work for me, I'll be passing along my jar of Punkie Night to a friend. In a different scent, I would finish the jar but would likely not purchase any more Bath Streusels.

Punkie Night is currently out of stock in Bath Streusel form but you can check out their current Streusel offerings here!

Indie Sample Storage Idea: Sample Binder

Notoriously Morbid samples
Hi everyone! Today I'd like to share a tip with you I've seen often on /r/indiemakeupandmore - using a collector's card binder to store sample baggies. I have dozens of samples from various brands, and it's hard to remember what I have. This is a great way to see my entire collection quickly and keep track of what I own.

Collector's Card Album
I went to a local collector's card store in Perth's CBD called Al's Card Shop and picked up an album with 10 pages. There were several size options available, as well as 2-ring binders that had single plastic card-holder sheets sold separately for those with never-ending card (or in our case, sample) collections.
Shiro Cosmetics samples
The samples all fit well and slide in easily- which unfortunately means they slide out easily. If you decide to store your samples like this, make sure not to turn the book upside down or move it around
a lot because the samples will fall out.

Femme Fatale Cosmetics samples
How do you store and keep track of your indie samples? Let me know below in the comments!

Perfume Review: Possets Arcturus

I'm always on the lookout for good vanilla perfumes, so when I saw the description of Arcturus, from Possets' Spring 2014 Night Sky collection, I decided to try a decant. I've had this since the spring, but didn't wear it for several months--I got it out again recently and decided it wasn't too late to write up a review; this scent became part of the Possets permanent collection, and so is still available for purchase.

Price: $12.50 for a 5 mL amber glass bottle of perfume oil with polyseal cap.
Samples: Not available for this scent.
(More details about price and shipping can be found in our Company Overview post about Possets.)
Description from the website: "Arc to Arcturus is a common saying in the astrological world. In this case Arcturus is a blend of the blackest of all vanillas in a swirl in dead space. It's a beautiful dark foodie blend which is a true hybrid between the wearable vanillas and those which you just wish to put your tongue on. Madagascar, two Mexican vanilla, and a dry and almost earthy Tahitian vanilla blend together to make a superb concoction for seduction. Intensely sophisticated and very up to date."

I honestly wasn't crazy about this scent when I first got it--it smelled very Bath and Body Works to me and boring in the sort of generic Warm Vanilla Sugar vein, but it has grown on me, and I'm not sure if that's the scent aging well or my feelings about the perfume changing.

The vanilla is sweet but slightly smoky and musky--it reminds me of toasted marshmallows with a hint of burning. If you like Solstice Scents' Snowshoe Pass, I think you'll like this perfume as well--they have a similar creamy, musky vibe. It's not terribly gourmand, as vanilla scents go--the dry muskiness tempers the sweetness a bit.

I've read a couple of reviews comparing this to BPAL's ultra-rare cult favorite Antique Lace, and I can definitely see the similarity, but I find Antique Lace much stronger, more "linen"-y, and a bit more powdery than Arcturus; Arcturus also has a slight bitter edge, especially as it wears on my skin for a while, that Antique Lace does not.

It's always nice to have permanently available, single-note indie vanilla perfumes out there for purchase, for layering or wearing alone. I have enough vanilla perfumes in my arsenal that I don't feel any need for a full size of this one, but I think it's a nice and affordable choice if you aren't already hoarding bottles and bottles of vanilla perfume.

For other opinions, check out More Tea, Wesley or the Possets forums.

Note: this scent is vegan.

Sneak Peek! New Cool-Toned Contours and Lip Gloss from Shiro Cosmetics!

Hey everyone! My fabulous co-blogger Kristin and I took a trip to Portland's Crafty Wonderland this past weekend, partially to get some Christmas shopping done and partially to drop by the Shiro Cosmetics booth. We got a chance to chat with Shiro masterminds Caitlin and Lauren, both of whom are just as awesome in person as they are online. While browsing the booth I was delighted to see they had some products out for sale that I'd never seen before - most notably, a new lip gloss and two new cool-toned additions to the Cheekbones contouring powder collection! I purchased one of each and I'm very excited to share swatches and preliminary thoughts with you. If you haven't seen my review of the original five shades in this collection, you can check that out here.

None of these are up on the website yet but they should be there as soon as the Shiro team recovers from Black Friday. It's my understanding the contour powders will be released as permanent products and the gloss will be up as a limited edition offering, available for about a month. I'll fill in the site descriptions and purchase links when everything appears on the website. I've copied in the powder ingredients from the labels. For reference, my skin tone is approximately MAC NC15 or Meow Sleek Korat - pale and warm-toned.

Let's take a look!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: Coming soon!

Ingredients: serecite mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide. Eye safe, lip safe.

Personal Comments: This is the second cool-toned matte gray in the Cheekbones collection, but I had pretty different experiences with the two shades. I don't have comparison swatches for you, but I did examine them side by side in the jars. An East Wind Coming has a definite green cast when it's next to the extra steely Do Your Research (shown above).

An East Wind Coming was my top pick of the first five shades, but even with my preference for cool-toned contour colors, I found Do Your Research was a little too cool for me. No matter how much I blended it under my cheekbones and along the sides of my nose, I had a gray stripe on my face and what appeared to be a dirty nose bridge. I suspect this would look best on folks with cool-toned skin. However, it's worth mentioning my warm-toned co-blogger Kristin tried this out and loved it! The powder is incredibly soft and finely milled, which makes it beautifully blendable, but I did notice it kicked up a little more dust than usual.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: Coming soon!

Ingredients: serecite mica, iron oxide, ferric ferrocyanide. Eye safe, not lip safe.

Personal Comments: Oh man, this is an awesome color! To my eyes, it's a cool-toned taupe that leans to plummy brown. This shade made for a soft and very natural contour on my warm-toned skin (roughly MAC NC15 or Meow Sleek Korat). I tried it both under my cheekbones and along the side of my nose, and I found it looked great in both locations. It is a matte shade, and the texture blends in nicely with my skin. As with Do Your Research, this is a beautifully soft, finely milled, and blendable powder. Unlike Do Your Research, I didn't notice it kicking up any excess dust. I'll have to do a contour smackdown to see whether I like Burn The Heart Out Of You more than An East Wind Coming, but either way, those two are my top picks of the Cheekbones collection.

From the website: Coming soon!

Ingredients: Coming soon!

Personal Comments: If I understood Caitlin correctly, Figgy Pudding is Shiro's answer to the Kylie Jenner brown lipstick trend. I think the team did a great job making a color that's unusual without being unapproachable!

I'm not entirely happy with the color accuracy in these photos - the arm and lip swatches kept pulling red regardless of lighting. The tube shot looks very close to what I see in real life, which is a deep color somewhere between brown and dark brick red. This definitely makes for a dark statement lip against my pale, warm-toned skin. I feel most comfortable wearing Figgy Pudding when I have a full face of makeup on to support such a strong lip color. I'll need to experiment with blush colors, because I'm not convinced it's pairing well with the warm-toned red I applied today. I think a nude blush will work really nicely with this.

The gloss smells of fruity baked goods to my nose, but I'm not sure what the official scent description is yet. I don't see any glitter or shimmer. The gloss both sheers out and builds up nicely for a variety of effects. As you may be able to see in the photo above, I did notice this gloss feathering a bit on my lower lip, so I'll make sure to outline my lips with a clear lip liner whenever I wear this shade.

Jessye Gets Bubbly! Solstice Scents Winter 2014 Part 1!

Solstice Scents Winter Collection Part I

I do believe the discovery of Solstice Scents has created a couple of fangirls here at Indie Know. It seems like every time I go to buy something for the blog or my personal use, Solstice Scents has something new and wonderful that I absolutely have to try and then tell you all about. We refrained from discussing Autumn Part II, since it came so close on the heels of the review of Autumn Part I, but rest assured, purchases were made.

This time around, my purchases were small (I'm sure Kristin bought more than I), but I did discover a new product for me that I can't wait to tell you all about.  As always, on a shared purchase, look for comments peppered throughout the review for other takes on different products.

So let's dig right in with:

Perfume

Dark Ginger Spicecake

Gingerbread, Woodsy Musk, Patchouli EO and Vetiver EO
AG:  I believe I've heard this described as a good foodie scent for anyone who's not usually into foodie scents, and I have to agree - I'm not a gourmand lover but this one has my attention. On me, it starts out as a very dark chocolate scent with almost no sweetness. It shifts pretty quickly into a mellow version of a gingerbread cookie. I get a light amount of cinnamon (impressive, since my skin usually amps cinnamon like crazy) along with ginger and other spices, but it's got a beautifully deep and rich base. I believe the base smells like dark molasses. I don't get any of the patchouli or vetiver mentioned in the description, so I assume they're hanging out in the background, adding to the deep and grounded base. The scent is certainly sweet, but nowhere near as sweet as some of Solstice's other bakery scents like Blueberry Muffin Batter or Chantilly Cream. It does fade down on me within an hour or two, but the lovely molasses base sticks around for many hours. Jessye picked this one up as a Whipped Soap.

Snowmint Mallow

Peppermint, Vanilla Cake, Flaked Coconut, Sugar Cookies & Marshmallow Creme
AG: Bakery scents can be tricky, but this smells incredibly realistic on me. I tested it without reading the description and immediately pictured buttery yellow cookies with shredded coconut baked into them. The other major player is a big hit of fresh mint; there's enough there to give me that cold sensation straight up to my sinuses. After maybe 15-20 minutes the mint settles down to a background role and lets the cake come join the cookies. The coconut has mostly gone by this point as well. Unfortunately this scent fades pretty quickly on me, but it's fun while it lasts.

Whipped Soap

Dark Ginger Spicecake

Gingerbread, Woodsy Musk, Patchouli EO and Vetiver EO
This whipped soap is creamier and heavier than the originally reviewed Wail of the Banshee. I also noticed particulates in this one that I had not seen in previous whipped soaps. I'm noticing with the drier winter air, it is a little more drying on my skin, and I am actually having to more regularly lotion, which is a small complaint and something that I should probably do more often. I have naturally oily skin and rarely lotion anything on a schedule except for my legs.

This is a complicated and intriguing scent. It says on the website that it has a “mysterious depth.” You would not think food smells mixed with incense would be such a delightful smell and yet somehow it works. The patchouli creates a spice, while the vetiver brings the scent from cake to something earthier. I used a massive amount on only my hands to see what would happen and only a faint full-body scent remained. It's fantastic and subtle afterwards, with a much stronger aromatherapy in the shower while in use. And after its first use, I couldn't help but have a delicious late night snack of iced gingerbread and chai tea.

Kristin adds: I dramatically increased the size of my soap collection with this order.

Lemon Ginger Creams

Gingersnap Sandwich Cookies Filled With Vanilla-Lemon Cream
Kristin: Mmmmmmm. I was worried that the ginger would be overwhelming in this but nope, the lemon stands out strongly and the ginger is only hinted at in a sweet gingerbread note. But the lemon isn't a tart, fruity lemon. It's definitely the cream filling of a sandwich cookie kind of sweet lemon. Since this is a soap, the lemon never faded away while I was using it though the owner noted that in perfume form, the lemon fades away after the initial application. This was my surprise favorite of the order.

Snowshoe Pass

White Amber, White Musk, Vanilla Accord, Peppermint Cream, Cold Winds
Kristin: I honestly can't decide if I like this one or not. It's one of those scents that's just very interesting and I keep smelling it because I think it's neat but I don't know if I'm actually enjoying it. For me, the musk note is very distracting in this scent and gives it all a weird kind of "undertone" - for lack of better descriptor. The peppermint cream isn't the sharp hard candy kind of peppermint but it's a soft milky version that sits lightly on top. It's complicated from the beginning and in soap form, stays complicated.

Outpost

Sugar Crystals, Spruce, Fir, Soft Woods, Bayberry, Mistletoe, Amber
Kristin: You'll get to hear more about this scent further down when Jessye talks about her Burnishing Glace. She tried her Glace before I tried this soap and she was excited about how good it was. She and I have very different tastes so I was a little cautious when I opened this one up. It was awesome to find out that I loved it too! It reminds me of pine trees with a hint of smokiness in the background.

Sugarvale

Candied Pecans, Butterscotch, Buttered Rum, Brown Sugar, Maple Syrup, Hot Pralines & Milk Chocolate Cocoa
Kristin:  This one smells exactly like Private Selection (the Kroger Brand) English Toffee Ice Cream. I kid you not. I had the ice cream out and the soap out at the same time and smelled both in rapid succession. Granted, one will probably make you sticky when you try to clean with it but other than that, they're probably the same thing. In case you don't have a freezer comically stuffed with varieties of ice cream to do smell testing with, imagine a thick caramel over pecans.

Dead Sea Salt Milk Bath

Spiced Cranberry & Spruce

Sugared Cranberries & Spruce Essential Oil

These salts are just as fantastic as the previously reviewed Foxcroft Bath Salts. I have no complaints on their usability and really just adore how they make me feel in the bath.
When we were first smelling this in the container, Kristin commented on how it smelled like Kool-Aid powder. It was extremely sweet, almost astringently so, and smelled almost dusty like a powder does in your nose. In the bath, the sweet melts down into tart with just hints of the woodier smells. I would be careful with these salts if you're scent sensitive. I could see them easily becoming overwhelming if too large a quantity was used. But if you like a tart cranberry scent, this is definitely the way to go.

Burnishing Glacé

Outpost

Sugar Crystals, Spruce, Fir, Soft Woods, Bayberry,  Mistletoe, Amber
We're going to do this one backwards and discuss the scent first. This is just a yummy woodsy, Solstice Scents smell, which is nothing just if you love woodsy smells as much as I, and Solstice does them so very well. The woods are sweetened just a bit by the bayberry and sugar crystals and then the whole thing is mellowed with amber. It's delicious.

I had not tried a Burnishing Glacé until this one, largely because I buy perfumes I love on their own and see no reason in layering, as well as I worry that I will just end up with a muddled scent that is undecipherable in its original components. Basically - I don't trust my ability to layer intricate and amazing things. I am not that imaginative or creative.

The Glacé has a multitude of uses from under a perfume to bath oil to hair oil. When I chose to buy Outpost as the Burnishing Glacé, it was because the scent of Outpost seemed to fantastic and intricate for a whipped soap; I am now wishing I had bought it as a soap as well.

The first thing I tried it as was a bath oil. Oh. My. Bath Oil. Most oil-based bath products are greasy to the touch on my skin, and I absolutely must wash them off after I use them.  I still chose to wash this one off after use, but that's because I was distracted by how beautiful it smelled and used almost half the bottle in the one bath. You could easily get 4 to 5 baths out of this one bottle if you have more control than I. And in this bath, my goodness, it is like bathing in liquid silk. This oil is rich and luxurious and just felt amazing on my skin. I love the feel of it. If you have dry skin, this would be a fantastic oil to bathe in and then rub into your skin afterwards. I have never felt a bath oil so soft and smooth.

I've reviewed a hair oil previously, and used it on another person because I have such fine, naturally oily hair. Since that review, I put a bleached blonde panel in my hair, which just means I have a chunk of blonde in my hair. Bleach is awful for your hair, very awful, as anyone can tell you. After feeling how beautiful the oil in this glacé is, I decided I would very carefully try it in the panel. Very, very carefully, I spritzed just one spray into my hair and then used my fingers to work it through the whole panel.  My hair loved it. The ends had begun to feel a little brittle from the bleach, like it wasn't getting enough moisture from my conditioner. If it weren't so obviously not my natural hair color, you would have no idea just by feel anymore.

I would perhaps not suggest this as a hair oil for someone who has a lot of hair and regularly needs to a fair amount of it on your hair. I could see that becoming cost preventative at around $15 a bottle, but if you just occasionally need a little extra moisture, it's a perfect option. That one spritz and half a spritz into just the bottom dried with the water with no residue, and my hair feels just as soft and wonderful as it always does. There is no product residue of any kind, and to make it even better, it has a lovely scent. I will be keeping the rest of the bottle for weekly moisture for my hair instead of using it out as bath oil. I have fallen in love with this product.

Random Product Review: Fyrinnae Lip Lustre in Dragon's Blood!

I'll admit it. The words I'm about to type are a giant blogging cliche... I can't believe I've never reviewed one of my favorite products.

Ok! Now that that's out of the way, let's take a look at Fyrinnae's Lip Lustre in Dragon's Blood. Our very own Valentine Glass recommended this product to me a couple years back and it was love at first application. Over time I've discovered some minor flaws with the product, but it's still easily my perfect red.

Let's start with the basics. If you're not familiar with Fyrinnae Cosmetics, you can read a helpful Company Overview by my co-blogger Kristin right here. If you want an in-depth look at the Lip Lustre formula (including swatches of a bunch of colors), my co-blogger Valentine did a comprehensive review right here

Full size Lip Lustres come in the same tube as the brand's cult favorite Pixie Epoxy. They contain slightly less product than Pixie Epoxy "due to the viscous nature of the Lustres" - Lip Lustres contain 8mL versus 9mL in Pixie Epoxy. I neglected to take a photo of the tube in my hand to give you a size reference, but it's nearly 1.5 times as tall as a Milani lipstick tube, and about 3/4 of an inch shorter than a Shiro gloss tube. It's a generous amount of product and should last a long time even with daily wear.

Dragon's Blood is listed as "a deep, rich, cool matte maroon-red, inspired by the vampy lipsticks of the 1920s. Can be applied as a lighter "berry stain" shade over balm." It's a couple of shades deeper than the classic red lipstick, but I don't think it wanders anywhere near vampy territory. Fyrinnae calls it matte, but as Valentine rightly points out, it's got more of a satin finish. If you can stand another cliche, I call it my Snow White red. Here's an arm swatch:

And here's how it looks on my lips. Please note I color corrected this lip swatch photo since it was a little overexposed:

I love the way this cool, deep red contrasts my pale, warm-toned skin (roughly NC15 in MAC shades or Sleek Korat in Meow shades), but it also looks stunning on Valentine, and I can see it working beautifully on darker skin tones as well.

Here are the pros of the formula:
- It's thin and lightweight. It's not quite light enough to feel like nothing's on my lips, but it's still pretty easy to forget I'm wearing it.
- It's opaque in one coat (one pull from the tube). I don't need to spend a lot of time layering it to get a lovely, rich color.
- It's not drying. It's not actively hydrating either, but I don't ever feel dried out while wearing it.
- It plays well with lip liner. If I'm in the mood for something a little brighter, it looks great over a neutral red liner.
- It's easy to apply with the included doe foot applicator. I can get reasonably good edges, even with my uneven lip line. The corners of my lips are a little tricky (but then, when aren't they?) so I usually do those last, when there's less product on the applicator.

And here are some drawbacks of the formula:
- It feathers on me. It's not bad enough to see it until I'm fairly close to the mirror, but it bugs me enough that I always put a clear lip liner around my lips whenever I wear this color.
- It doesn't stand up to food so well. Granted, I am not a dainty eater, but this is not a marathon lip color. When I eat a meal with a fork while wearing Dragon's Blood, I can see some fading at the inside of my lower lip. It doesn't even stand a chance against a sandwich.
- It transfers somewhat, even after giving it plenty of time to set. It's not bad by any means, but it will leave a print on a mug or anyone you kiss.

The formula's not perfect, but since the drawbacks are easy to work around and the color makes me feel like a million bucks, it's got top billing among my red lipsticks. If you're interested in picking up a tube for yourself, you can purchase them right here.

Have you ever tried Dragon's Blood, or any other colors from Fyrinnae's Lip Lustre line?
