Company Overview: Innocent + Twisted Alchemy

I first heard about Innocent + Twisted Alchemy right here on Indie Know from Kristin's fabulous swatches and praise of the formula (yes, we enable each other too!). I was intrigued by the artistry of the packaging and of course the pigmentation from Kristin's swatches so when they had a sale, I decided to give them a go.

Packaging:

Cutest packing tape
My goodies arrived in a padded envelope, and the seal was covered with funky packaging tape. Inside there was red bubble wrap around a pink ziploc bag with an owl, all secured with more decorative tape. I love all the little extra details of pretty prints and colours for something that is usually so plain and boring!

Red bubble wrap!
My order contained mostly sample clamshells, which were fine in transit despite not having any seal (though I don't think seals would be necessary, the clamshells do require some force to open so they're not likely to leak). I don't mind the clamshell, they're sturdier than bags and take up less space than screw-top jars. However you will need to take a bit of care when opening them because I have heard that some people make a bit of a mess when opening them. What I normally do is drop the clamshells from a few inches above my surface a couple of times then tap the lid to dislodge any excess powder that may be clinging to it. I haven't had any major spills yet (fingers crossed!). I have one full-sized jar which is a screw-top lid on a square base, the rim was wrapped with decorative tape, I assume for security during transit.

Kristin adds: I also wanted to briefly mention the beautiful collection artwork! The owner does most of the anime-esque artwork by herself but also occasionally partners with other artists to do some of the design work - as in the Hagelstram Arsenal! Purchasing a full collection also usually includes a larger (usually around 2"x3") version of the eyeshadow artwork.

Selection:

Currently on offer are eyeshadows and a subscription service (which I personally haven't tried but I've seen some great reviews so far). There are several themed collections, some of which are limited edition. Full-sized eyeshadows packed full into a 5g jar. If you're feeling indecisive or are unsure where to start, you can order a Grande Lucky Pack (5 random full-sized jars) or a Petite Lucky Pack (5 random clamshells).

Samples:

Samples are $3 and are packed into clamshells. While they do cost more than most brands' samples, they are very generously filled and would probably last at least 10 applications. You can see how fully packed they are in Kristin's Curios Night Spotlight Collection. With my order I also received two free sample baggies.

The sample clamshells do not list ingredients, but they do list eye/lip/face safety and whether or not the shade is vegan. The freebie sample baggies contain a full ingredient listing.

Sample clamshells and freebie sample baggies

Quality:

Innocent + Twisted Alchemy's eyeshadow formula is definitely one of my favourites of all the indie eyeshadows I've tried. I was really blown away by the smoothness and pigmentation when I applied them dry over Urban Decay's Primer Potion.

Cost:

Prices start at $3 for samples, $6 for full-sized eyeshadows. In the sale section, samples are $2 and full-sized eyeshadows are $4.

Customer Service:

I contacted customer service once with a shipping inquiry, and received a response within 10 minutes as well as a bonus personalized code :)

Kristin's incredible swatches of the Endless Rain Collection - I am in full agreement with her, you NEED the Endless Rain eyeshadow!

TAT:

The current turn-around-time listed on the site is 10-14 business days. My package was shipped 5 days after I had placed my order.

Shipping:

Flat-rate shipping for the United States is $3.50, and $6.50 for international shipping. The FAQ page states that domestic orders take from 2-10 business days from the stated TAT (meaning not from the date the order was placed) to arrive, and international orders can take between 2 and 12 weeks.

My order reached me in Western Australia one month (21 business days) after I placed it, which for me is about an average amount of time (not excessively long that I need be concerned).

Owl ziploc bag, business card, and ingredient listing from the Holiday 2011 LE Collection

Personal Thoughts:

If I haven't made it clear by now, I love not only the eyeshadow quality, but all the little attention to the details of packaging! I would lose so many hours in whatever store the packaging supplies are bought from. And of course the artwork on the eyeshadows themselves, I love how the themed collections have their own art which adorn the jars and even the sample clamshells. I haven't found any faults yet, my one request would be to see some products other than eyeshadows added to the brand, a Google search yielded a limited edition blush that is no longer available but I'd love to see some permanent blushes/lip products. Another thing I like about Innocent + Twisted Alchemy is that the owner, Linda, is very support of other indie brands, including them in her subscription box and regularly sharing updates from other indie brands on Innocent + Twisted Alchemy's Facebook page.

Kristin adds: Though I absolutely LOVE Innocent + Twisted Alchemy, one thing I'd like to mention is that the eyeshadows are all VERY shimmery. If glitters and shimmers aren't your thing, ITA's current lineup may not be for you. With that said, some are definitely more shimmery than others so definitely take a look at what they have!

Two Figs, Niche and Indie: BPAL Gomorrah vs. Diptyque Philosykos

Let's have a little fig-off.

...That sounds both perplexing and dirty!

For today's review, I've picked out a couple of fig perfumes I enjoy--these are both fig-centric, but very, very different from one another.

First up, we have:
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Gomorrah
Price: $17.50 for a 5 mL bottle of perfume oil
Samples: Available for $4.00 or as part of a 6-pack for $22.
Shipping: See our company overview post about Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab for more details about their shipping policies.
Description from the website: "One of the Biblical Cities on the Plain, destroyed by God with fire and brimstone because of its people’s pride, prosperous ease, deceit, hedonism and indolence, and their callous, uncharitable hearts. A gritty, sordid and languid scent: ripe fig, date and currant with black herbs."

And, in the other corner:
Diptyque Philosykos
Price: $88 for a 50 mL bottle of eau de toilette, $120 for a 100 mL bottle of EDT, $55 for a 7.5 mL roll-on of perfume oil$48 for a 4.5 g solid perfume, or $140 for a 75 mL bottle of eau de parfum. Note that this brand occasionally goes on sale on Hautelook for half off.
Samples: Only available with purchase from Diptyque, but you can purchase decants from places like The Perfumed Court or Luckyscent.
Shipping: Multiple UPS options are available, starting from $7.77 to ship a solid perfume within the US via UPS Ground. Shipping is free for orders over $75. I am unclear on Diptyque's international shipping options, but the site has dropdown selections for the UK and France, so I assume you can at least ship to those two countries.
Description from the website: "In the heat of a Greek summer, “to get to the sea,” recalls Yves, “you had to walk through a natural orchard of wild fig trees.” Returning from Paris, Desmond brought back a few leaves of these trees in a little box. Years later, the leaves had lost none of their fragrance. Philosykos, which in Greek means “friend of the fig tree,” is an ode to the entire tree: the green, pungent freshness of the leaves, the wood warmed in the sun, the milky flavor of the fruit."

My thoughts:
Gomorrah has a thick, herbal, almost medicinal camphor quality when wet that fades a bit as it dries down. It has heavy helpings of dirt and vetiver, and the fig smells dried, dark, sticky, chewy, combining with the date and currant to give an overall impression of dark, spicy incense--"languid" is accurate.

Though it has a certain sweetness from the fruit, it doesn't come across to me as a sweet scent; it's dry and earthy, dirty and mysterious. The fig note that I love becomes more prominent the longer I have the scent on my skin--it starts to smell like black figs rolled in leaves and stems and dirt, woody and ever-so-slightly green.

Philosykos is the other end of the fig spectrum. It goes on pleasant, fresh, and green, with a bright grassy topnote that smells like new foliage crushed between your fingers. The fruitiness of the fresh fig note and the slightly bitter chlorophyll grassiness is constantly tempered by an underlying chord of dry, warm wood and something very faintly milky-smelling, but it remains a fresh, cheerful bright green scent overall.

The description of it as "an ode to the entire tree" seems pretty accurate to me: I can smell all the components named in the scent description, and they meld into a harmonious and beautiful whole.

It wears on with its fresh green notes for a surprisingly long time, given that it's an EDT--I can smell it lingering after a whole day.

Philosykos is my favorite fig scent, and one of my favorite perfumes overall, which I'm kind of sorry about given the price--I very seldom spend so much on perfume, but I bought a sample of this at some point, fell in love, used it up, and ended up finally springing for the pricey bottle of EDT when I saw it on sale on Hautelook.

So, here are two fig scents: one gnarled and dark, earthy and sexy; one fresh and sunny, creamy and green. I love smelling different, opposing interpretations of a single note like this. Have you tried either of these scents? Which version of "fig" appeals to you more? What are your favorite fig perfumes?

(A couple others I like: L'Artisan Perfumer Premier Figuier and Pacifica Mediterranean Fig--these are both more straightforward and similar to Philosykos in composition and approach, though neither is as green and bright to my nose--fresh fig and fig leaves, wood notes, milky smooth sap. The Pacifica perfume in particular is an excellent cheap thrill, and a pretty little tin of the solid perfume lives permanently in my travel toiletries bag.)

Company Overview! Possets

Possets is an indie perfume company run by Fabienne Christenson and based in Cincinnati, OH. They're best known for their gourmand fragrances, and in my experience, if you want to explore their collection, you'd better have a serious sweet tooth.

Packaging:
Possets perfumes come in fairly standard packaging for indie perfume oils--amber glass 5 mL or 10 mL bottles with polyseal cap and matte paper label, or the usual clear glass vials with matte paper "flag" labels for their samples. Their label art is colorful and neither exceptionally well designed nor exceptionally terrible. It's been a while since I've ordered a package from Possets, but in my experience, they've come with the scents safely wrapped and bundled in a decorative mesh drawstring pouch.

Selection:
Possets offers two main types of perfumes: "Classic Possets" and "100% Natural Possets," the latter being more expensive, but made of 100% natural components. I appreciate that they've clearly labeled this divide in their catalog--I don't personally care if a scent is made of natural components, but I know many people do.

In addition, they have the usual divide between permanent and limited edition seasonal scents; it looks like there are 171 permanent scents at the moment. The lovely thing about the way Possets handles this is that they select three limited edition scents to add to their general catalog at the end of each season, based on voting in their forum. They also hold periodic events called "Retours" where older, discontinued scents are briefly available for reorder.

The Endangered Blends page on the website lists scents with known component issues, where there is a limited amount of an ingredient remaining and no way to obtain more, meaning the scent will be discontinued once the current supply runs out.

Last but not least, Cambienne is a limited edition perfume with a unique and sort of weird concept: a vat of Cambienne is made at the beginning of the year, and sold until only a small amount remains. Then, at the end of each month, the reserves of Cambienne are blended with new ingredients to create a new variation on the scent, which is then renamed and sold until only the reserves remain--wash, rinse, repeat each month, with the perfume evolving and getting more complex over the course of the year. Cambienne is quite popular and usually sells out fairly quickly.

Some subsets of their catalog to be aware of:

  • The "Silver" series consists of their "silver" note (a vanilla musk) blended with other notes--Silver Carnations is one really lovely one, and Silver Bells (a lily of the valley scent) is on my wishlist.
  • The "States" series has perfumes inspired by different states in the US. I don't think she has a complete set yet, but not all of them seem to be tagged properly, so you might need to do some searching to find your state if you're interested. Of the ones I've tried, I'd recommend Utah, a sort of Bath and Body Works-esque creamy raspberry scent.
  • The "Colors" series has scents inspired by different colors, with an interesting selection including Venus Black, Cadmium Red, and Puce.

Samples:
Samples are available for all permanent scents in a pack of 6 for $12.50 (for Classic Possets) or $22.86 (for Possets Naturals). There are two pre-made packs, one for newbies and one with a selection of Orientals. Free samples are included with paid orders.

Quality:
Possets perfumes are a pretty mixed bag for me. There are some wonderful ones in the catalog--you just need to sort through them. The "miss" ratio for me has been pretty high, though. I tend to find them overly sweet and similar to one another, fading more quickly than some other brands I've tried, and often not true to the descriptions.

My recommendations: look for reviews (if you have any particular requests, I'll see if I have samples I can review) and stick with the perfumes described as masculine, dark, or incensey. I burned through a pile of the sweeter, foodie, vanilla or honey-based perfumes, which all sounded wonderful in the descriptions, but which were all weaker, blander, and more cloyingly sweet than I could handle.

Some of my favorites, like The Scent of Angels and Perpetual Motion Machine, have sadly been discontinued, but others, like Linden Tea or The Gingerbread Whorehouse, are still available and definitely worth checking out.

Cost:
Three of Possets' biggest selling points are their pricing, shipping policies, and turnaround time. The 5 mL bottles are $12.50 for Classic scents, $22.86 for Naturals; the Classic scents are very affordable.

Full bottles are available not only in the 5 mL size but in a larger 10 mL size for $18.23 ($34.23 for Naturals).

Customer Service:
I don't think I've ever had to contact Fabienne about a problem, but she is friendly and chats with customers on the Possets forum (and she's very active in social media in general, with a blog, Facebook page, Youtube channel, Twitter account, podcast and newsletter!). Based on her active online presence, I would expect customer service to be professional and satisfactory, but I can't vouch for it personally.

TAT:
I have always received my orders from Possets in a very timely manner, usually within a few days of placing the order. I watched a video at some point where she mentions that she has part-time, on-demand help with packing orders when she gets too busy, which I think is great--and if she can manage a quick and professional turnaround time, with a catalog of hundreds of scents, I don't quite understand why all indie companies can't do something similar, rather than dragging out their quoted turnaround times to weeks or months. Anyway, I digress; if you need a quick indie retail therapy fix, I would definitely recommend Possets.

Shipping:
The last element in the trifecta of Possets' great strengths: shipping policies. All orders of $75 and over are shipped for free anywhere in the world, and they offer a choice between first class USPS, Priority USPS, FedEx, or UPS shipping options.

This includes international customers, which is great--too often, indie companies will only offer International Priority shipping at extremely high flat rates. International First Class USPS shipping is far more affordable.

When I added a sample pack to my shopping cart and estimated shipping costs using the website calculator, shipping started at $4.07 for domestic first class mail, $8.55 for international first class mail (I checked these costs using Canada, Italy, and New Zealand as my target countries).

Personal Thoughts:
I'm quite fond of Possets--they put out imaginative limited edition collections, they are very professionally run, and their brand seems spunky and fun--and I have some perfumes from them I really love.

However, the hit or miss aspect of their scents has put me off from ordering anything from them in the last year or so. I can't necessarily tell from reading a notes list if a scent will smell anything like the way it's described, or if I'll like it at all. I remember Mary Shelley and the Girls Love... series being particular murky-sweet disappointments to me despite wonderful-sounding descriptions. If I weren't drowning in perfumes already, I'd be more inclined to continue exploring their catalog.

However, since they are affordable, have a sizable catalog, and ship quickly and fairly cheaply, I think they are a great way to explore different scents if you're starting out in the world of indie perfume.

If I were putting together a newbie sample pack from the scents I've tried, I'd suggest the following six:

I've made no attempt here to pick out a variety of scents in different genres or anything--these are just my top six that are in their current permanent catalog.

Are you a fan of Possets? Any recommendations for recent scents I should check out, since I've been out of the loop on their perfumes for the last year or so?

Perfume Review - Darling Clandestine's Tilt-a-Whirl

Tilt-A-Whirl,

Do you find yourself trying to appear more grown up? Plagued with a cute baby face? Maybe you're a bit on the short side, or maybe you just are blessed with youthful genes. Either way, many people agree that certain fragrances are more "youthful" than others - as mentioned in the Beginner's Guide to Fragrances, there are even studies that point to grapefruit "smelling" younger to people!

So what do you do when you're trying to present yourself as being older and mature, but all the scents you're drawn to are youthful? What if I *like* fruity citrus fragrances? Darling Clandestine's Tilt-A-Whirl sounded like a promising compromise of the things I look for in my fragrances.

Collection Spotlight! Innocent and Twisted Alchemy's Hell Wonderland: the Sanctity of Solitude!

Purchased

Like the Broken Heart Trio, the Sanctity of Solitude is a quartet that belongs to Innocent + Twisted alchemy's Hell Wonderland series. Hell Wonderland is intended to be a large collection of trios and quads but at the moment, this quartet and the Broken Heart Trio are the two offerings.

This is a blue focused collection and contrasts very well to the reds in the Broken Heart Trio. As always, these shades are very glittery, very pigmented and have plenty of depth.
