Top Teal Picks for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Even though September is almost over, I wanted to share some of my favourite indie teal products in honour of Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. Ominously dubbed 'the silent killer,' approximately 14,230 women in the United States will die from ovarian cancer. All women, regardless of race or age, are at risk. (source: Ovarian Cancer Awareness)

Source: National Ovarian Cancer Network

Teal is the official colour for ovarian cancer, and it was a bit tricky when I was looking through my indie stash since teal is neither blue nor green, but somewhere in between. I like to think of it sort of as a dark turquoise.

L-R: Femme Fatale Cosmetics (FFC) Arcane Storm, FFC Emerald Dream, FFC Eternal Trance, FFC Naga Mask, FFC Planeshift, Meow Cosmetics Sorrow, Makeup Geek Sea Mist. Photographed in direct sunlight, dry, without a base.
As you can see, I found many versions of teal! Here are the descriptions from the websites:

Femme Fatale Cosmetics -

  • Arcane Storm has a blue-grey base with a very subtle green finish.
  • Emerald Dream is a bright Paris green bordering on teal with a very subtle golden green shine.
  • Eternal Trance is a dark pine green with strong teal green shimmer.
  • Naga Mask is a soft turquoise with teal tones, and subtle blue shimmer.
  • Planeshift if a blend of pale jungle green and teal with slightly grey tones, and striking gold shimmer.
Meow Cosmetics - Sorrow is a strong blue/green duochrome teal.

Makeup Geek - Sea Mist: Shimmery turquoise. You could spend years surveying the seas before encountering such a splendid combination of a calm, emerald green shade and a glistening shimmer.

And here are my indie teal nail polishes -

L-R: Femme Fatale Cosmetics Hydraxia, Smitten Polish Copper Canyon, Pretty Serious Nightopia
I used one thin coat of Pretty Serious' Nightopia as a base, then on my thumb, middle, and pinky fingers, I applied two coats of Smitten Polish's Copper Canyon, and on my pointer and ring fingers, I applied Femme Fatale Cosmetics' Hydraxia.

L-R: Femme Fatale Cosmetics Hydraxia, Smitten Polish Copper Canyon, Pretty Serious Nightopia. Photographed in sunlight on a cloudy day.
Website descriptions -

Smitten Polish Copper Canyon is a green-leaning teal jelly with several sizes of copper and rose copper glitter, plus coppery shimmer. (It no longer appears to be available on Smitten Polish's Etsy shop so I linked to Femme Fatale's page).

Pretty Serious Nightopia - like an ever-changing field of dreams full of A-Life, this polish is a spectacular teal green with glimmering golden shimmer.

Femme Fatale Cosmetics Hydraxia - A sheer jelly base of deep sea green full of multiple teal, turquoise, ocean blue, bright blue and soft flecks of yellow in various shapes and sizes.

What are some of your favourite teal products?

Silk Naturals: Mystery Adventure Club Review #2

Silk Naturals Mystery Adventure Club Review #2
Silk Naturals Mystery Adventure Club Subscription Box

You've been sitting at your cubicle all day, listening to your coworkers all aflutter over their newest Birchbox and comparing contents. "Gee," you muse to yourself, "if only there was some sort of indie subscription box!"

Luckily, there are indie boxes out there, but they're a little tricky to find. There's the Glitter Guilty Pleasures Box Gift if you're looking for some indie nail polish, the Indie Style Box for a little bit of everything indie - neither of these I've ever tried before. However, when I heard that Silk Naturals, one of my favorite indie companies, was offering their own Birchbox-style subscription for a three-month span, I jumped!

Swatch Post! Black Rose Minerals : Were Me Out, Black Sunshine, Nobodies, and Two Cents!

From the website: Wet turns it into a metallic green while dry shows off the shimmery tones wonderfully.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, magnesium myristate and magnesium stearate.

SAFE FOR EYES, LIPS, FACE AND NAILS.

Personal Comments: A fantastically strong, duochrome-esque yellow/green shadow. It's a vibrant green with hints of yellow in some lights, and a brighter yellow-toned green in others. I don't think that I would consider this a true duochrome just because in all lights, there are still very strong notes of each color. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website:  A blackened antique gold with a light dusting of multi-shimmer sparkles.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: iron oxide, mica, titanium dioxide, tin oxide, D&C black #2, polyester 3, carnauba wax, calcium aluminum borosilicate, calcium carbonate, methicone and silica.

SAFE FOR EYES, LIPS, FACE AND NAILS.

Personal Comments: Part of the Not Another Zombie collection. This shadow is more complex than it may first appear. It looks like just another black with glitter but it actually has bits of gold mixed into the base shadow to give it that pretty sheen. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website:  A deep, shimmery electric blue, this one is true to color wet or dry.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: iron oxide, mica, titanium dioxide, tin oxide, ferric ferrocyanide, carnauba wax, glitter powder, magnesium myristate and silicon dioxide.

SAFE FOR EYES, FACE AND NAILS.
NOT LIP SAFE.

Personal Comments: Part of the Luciferi collection. I have yet to be disappointed by a single shadow in this collection. Nobodies is a dark blue with hints of a black base. The purple and blue glitter makes the eyeshadow a little brighter and really compliments the shadow base. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website:  This light copper shimmers just like that new shiny penny you found in your pocket.

Eye Shadow Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, aluminum oxide, magnesium myristate, magnesium stearate, boron nitride, bismuth oxychloride and carmine

SAFE FOR EYES, LIPS, FACE AND NAILS.
NOT VEGAN

Personal Comments: More of a coral than a copper to me. Two Cents is an orange/red with strong pinky tones in the right light. It has less glitter than others in the BRM line. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

Company Overview: Darling Clandestine

Hi everyone! Today I'd like to tell you about an indie perfume company I've really been enjoying.

Darling Clandestine is an Etsy company based out of Chicago, Illinois, USA. As of writing this post, Darling Clandestine creates solid perfumes, fragrance oils, scented body balms, and scented lip balms, all in a variety of fragrances.

Packaging: The solid perfumes are beautifully packaged in 1/2 ounce round metal tins with a scent-specific image sticker on top and an ingredients sticker on the bottom. According to the listings on Etsy, the solid perfumes' stickers are "high-quality vinyl stickers" - per the description, these are slower to disintegrate in one's bathroom or handbag than standard paper stickers. Fragrance oils come in 1/2 ounce amber bottles and body balms come in 4 ounce round metal tins; both have labels indicating the scent name but they don't boast the same individual photography you see on the solid perfumes. Lip balms come in rectangular metal tins with a sliding lid and unique, drawn labels that vary by scent.

I purchased these four solid perfumes. The product color variations aren't due to the lighting - they all look different! Clockwise from upper left: Mishigami, Monstre Delicat, Aragon, Serpentina

I purchased four solid perfumes, and as a first-time buyer, I found the labeling scheme for this particular product to be a little confusing from a practical standpoint. The photographs used for the solid perfumes are beautiful and the stickers are clearly of high quality, but the scent name isn't written anywhere on the tin. I found I had to pull up Darling Clandestine's Etsy page several times and compare my tins' stickers with the listings before I had memorized the names of all the fragrances. It certainly doesn't affect the quality of the product in the slightest, but if I manage to forget the name of a scent I want to reorder, I can't just search for "the one with a close-up of high heels" or "the one with the exposed boob" in Etsy's search box. That said, the photographs are unique enough that it's easy to pull up the shop page and compare.

Selection: Darling Clandestine seems to have a great selection. Between my four solid perfumes and my lip balm (the latter was a freebie with my order), I haven't yet tried the majority of this shop's offerings, but I'm impressed with the variety in both my own purchases and in descriptions of the scents I've not yet tried. Though the scents seem to lean toward the off-beat or oddball end of the spectrum, there seems to be enough variety for everyone to find their own weird favorite. I found this stickied note on their Facebook page to be especially helpful - it lists all the shop's scent names and descriptions, including seasonals. As of writing this post, the shop also offers unscented versions of their body balm and lip balm.

"La Malinche" lip balm by Darling Clandestine. This lip balm was free with my order of solid perfumes. The tin is huge - as tall as my palm!

I didn't see any samples listed in the shop, so I wrote to the owner (Evonne) via Etsy conversation and asked if samples were available. As it turns out, yes they are! She told me she lists them on request, and you can purchase three scent samples for $3.50 (as of writing this post). If you're interested, I recommend sending Evonne a message on Etsy to set up your order.

Vegans should be aware that the standard solid perfume blend contains beeswax, but the shop owner indicates you can send her a message to request a vegan alternative.

Cost: I am perfectly happy with the cost of the products, especially given their high quality and the great customer service. As of writing this post, solid perfumes are $9-$10 each, fragrance oils are $14-$16 each (except a special limited edition scent which is $22), body balms are $22 each, and lip balms are $8 each. The shop runs frequent sales from their Facebook page and Etsy shows at least a couple of listings in which you can buy multiple products for a discount.

Customer Service: As I mentioned before, I wrote to Evonne via Etsy conversation to ask if she offered samples. I received a near-instant response (within ten minutes) and a very kind message. Additionally, she seems very active on Facebook - answering questions as well as posting updates about whatever blend she's currently brewing. All in all she seems very approachable as well as dedicated to providing excellent customer service.

TAT: I placed my first order during a sale (which always slows things down!) on August 22. My order shipped on September 2. I believe the TAT was listed at seven business days, so this is perfectly fine. I understand the owner has a full-time job unrelated to the shop, so I suspect the TAT will always be perfectly respectable but not lightning speed.

Personal thoughts: Scents are so incredibly personal, but for what it's worth, I'm really enjoying my purchases from Darling Clandestine. To my great chagrin I've discovered I'm incredibly picky about scents, but already one of this brand's scents (Mishigami) has become one of my new favorite perfumes. I'm happy enough with what I've purchased that I'm eager to test out more of the brand's offerings. I'll definitely be ordering at least one bundle of samples soon, and I'm already eager for spring so I can try more of her seasonal offerings.

Have you tried anything by Darling Clandestine? If so, what did you buy and what do you think of it? If not, are you interested in trying them out?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personal Comments: A bright pinky/purple shade that turns more purple in darker light. Applied over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. This picture was taken outside in natural light.

OHWTO: Spring/Summer 2013 Review (Part 1)

One Hand Washes the Other (OHWTO) Spring/Summer 2013 Review
One Hand Washes the Other (OHWTO) combines spring and summer into one collection

I can't get enough of spring and summer. I feel like once I finish powering through a snowy New England winter, I've earned my warm weather. Those long months of slushy muck leave much to be desired, and I spent many, many days imagining laying on the beach, rolling in the grass, and not clearing ice off my car.

You can stockpile all kinds of springy, summery fragrances and squirrel away your flowery, fruity scents. But what if that's not good enough for you? "Strawberries? I can buy some from the grocery store and it's the same thing. I want real warm weather, and I won't rest until I find it!"

If this were the beginning to a children's movie, you'd eventually be consumed with madness and set out on an evil quest to capture the very essence of spring and summer, thrusting the world into chaos and plunging it into a never-ending winter while you suck all warmth and joy from the land. Inevitably some sort of youthful gang of heroes with talking animal sidekicks will save the day, and you'll never attain your true goal: Springy Summer in a Bottle.

One Hand Washes the Other (OHWTO) Spring/Summer 2013

One Hand Washes the Other (affectionately known as OHWTO, because let's be honest: that's a mouthful) has combined their spring and summer fragrances into one convenient collection. I'm sure it's different in other areas of the world, but here in New England our seasons towards the end of winter are very....fluid. One week we'll be buried under snow, the next it's 80F and sunny. So this collection has a little bit of everything that makes spring and summer what they are, with an extra pinch of uniqueness (no hostile world-takeover necessary).

The Spring/Summer 2013 collection from OHWTO offers the following fragrances:
  • Beach Bum
  • Rum Runner
  • Make It So
  • Dandelion Wine
  • The Girl Who Waited
  • Chrietzhaus
  • Something Blue
  • Paradox

In this review, I'll be checking out the first four spring/summer fragrances from OHWTO.

NOTD: Girly Bits' Stormy Skies

Photographed under a lamp
It's officially spring here in Australia! Though the past few week here in Perth it hasn't feel like it, we've been having heaavvy, heavy rain which prompted me to pull out Girly Bits' Stormy Skies. Here's the description from the Girly Bits' website - "Stormy Skies is from the Sea's the Day Collection. It is a medium blue-grey with a hint of micro-glitter that shows gold or green, depending on the skies. Sparkly and pretty."

Photographed in the shade
Here I've used 3 coats of Stormy Skies with Essie's All in One base coat and No Chips Ahead top coat (I don't have bionic nails like some nail polish and beauty bloggers - most nail polishes stain horrendously on me and last less than 24 hours without a topcoat!). It was a bit patchy after two thin coats so I needed a third for full opacity. What surprised me a bit was the texture, there is a bit of a gritty feeling from the glitter. It's not extremely rough like sandpaper, just something I wasn't expecting. The effect of the glitter is really beautiful, when it catches the light it produces a beautiful shine and I am in love with the blue-grey base since it's a non-traditional nail colour.

Photographed in direct sunlight
I purchased Stormy Skies from Femme Fatale Cosmetics since I live in Australia, but you can buy Girly Bits polishes directly from their website (they are based in Canada) or one of their authorized distributors. Girly Bits Nail Lacquer are hand blended and poured, big 3 free, 15mL, and not tested on animals.

Collection Spotlight: The Tributes Collection by Shiro Cosmetics

Hi everyone! Today I'd like to show you the Tributes Collection from Shiro Cosmetics. I purchased the full collection myself as minis in 2012. This collection is based on The Hunger Games, and it has a great mix of neutrals, incredibly vibrant brights, and intense dark shades. Since everything Shiro makes is vegan, this collection is, naturally, 100% vegan. You can purchase the collection here, either as individual shades or as a full collection for a 10% discount (as of writing this post).

As a heads up, Shiro's mini eyeshadow jars no longer come with stickers on top of the jars; those are now exclusive to the full sized eyeshadows. On to the collection!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: Shimmery light golden brown with blue sparks. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica.

Personal Comments: This is one of my favorite neutral eyeshadows. I love that it's a lovely, unassuming tan, but with a twist in the form of light blue sparks. I always suggest this shade when folks ask for Shiro recommendations. Swatch done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken indoors under daylight bulbs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the website: Shimmery forest green with subtle brown-gold tones. Not lip-safe.

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, chromium green oxide.

Personal Comments: This is a beautiful green with a gold sheen; you can see the sheen in the macro shot above. Unfortunately, this one stained my arm a bit when swatching it, so you may need an oil-based makeup removal method to take this one off. Swatch done over Urban Decay Primer Potion and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. Photos taken indoors under daylight bulbs.

From the website: Charcoal black with deep blue shimmer and sparkles. Lip-safe!

Ingredients: mica, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, blue #1, yellow #5.

From the website: Shimmery gold-bronze with purple sparks. Not lip-safe.

As a bonus, here's a swatch collage showing Wildflowers as a custom lip gloss with moderate opacity (here's the purchase link for all custom glosses).

As a moderate opacity gloss, Wildflowers turns into a baby pink with a ton of shimmer. Lovers of subtle lip products, beware - the shimmer comes across as metallic, or even downright frosty, on the lips. Photos taken indoors under daylight bulbs.
